LeBron to make his announcement on ESPN Thursday night

LeBron James will make an announcement in an hour-long special Thursday night on ESPN, starting at 9 p.m. Eastern. Chris Broussard, the ESPN reporter who has the best contacts in the LeBron James camp of just about anyone, made the announcement on ESPN News.

LeBron and his people will sell sponsorships of the show, with the money going to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, according to ESPN.

There is no word yet on where LeBron will be during the announcement.

A national television announcement with money going to a national charity — hard to read too much into that about where LeBron might play next year. However, reports now say that it is likely down to Cleveland or Miami, where he would team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Of course, the way this free agency has gone, that could all change in the next 20 minutes. Twice.

What you can read into this — it takes a pretty big ego to ask ESPN for an hour like that. There is potential for backlash, something LeBron saw when he did the Larry King interview during the NBA finals. He either ends up on national television to break Cleveland’s heart, or he has an hour-long special on himself to say he is going nowhere. Both options have public relations problems to deal with.

    1 hour special? For charity?
Sounds like he’s staying in Cleveland to me. It’s all like a Made-for-TV movie on Lifetime. That storybook ends with him staying in his hometown, you know… for the fans.
    Good drama, though.

I’m not a homer Knick fan, but it looks like New York to me.. but what the hell does anyone know.

    King James,
You are just too much..you haven’t won anything yet..and please don’t blame that on Cavs not putting a better team for you..you choke in playoffs many times… against Celtics this year..and against Spurs in you were in finals… be the man..own your mistakes

anyone who watches this show should be shot. LeBron is so full of himself

  8. Harold - Jul 6, 2010 at 10:31 PM

I guess he is staying in Cleveland, cause surely he wouldn’t crush all of northeast Ohio on national television.

Only Chicago can handle an ego like this!!! Bye Bye Cleveland, looks like DREW CAREY is still your biggest claim to fame!!

  10. Heat Fan.... - Jul 6, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Let’s not forget about the Heat all.. yes they do not have alot under contract right now but we are talking about Riley who has more titles than the current coaches of the Cavs, Bulls, Nets and Knicks put together and I am sure he will again put together another winner and lets just hope it includes both Wade and Lebron In sunny South Florida!!!!!! But who knows like Manny said this could all be a home town drama made for tv….

It’s silly to speculate that this makes it “look like” anything. ESPN had a two hour World Cup Finals preview scheduled at that time. It seems to me it became a one hour preview. What a coup for them.
BTW, I just got a kick out of this. My “Captcha” beneath this is “codeine day”. Is Jamarcus Russell in charge of these things? Maybe I should put in “purple drank and see what happens.

Check out Knicks – blog . com and read the story about James reps going to NY Wednesday to talk with Knicks and James probably as well.

I officially can’t stand Lebron James anymore.
This is about as lame as lame could be…a real man (who knew exactly what he wanted to do) would have met with the teams and made a decision. This is at the level of Jon Gosselin.
I pray he does NOT come to Chicago. I’ll puke.
Michael Jordan was a man. He took a joke franchise and made it win. He didn’t need this B.S.
Seriously, LBJ…if this is true, do us all a favor and stay in Cleveland…

Dear Lord, how far have we fallen (IQ’s). A one hour special to announce where he is playing? I have never heard of something so idiotic…never. Tis isnt news. Win a championship, thats news.

Guarantee that the NBA wants this to happen. David Stern is orchestrating this whole thing and you guys know it.

I told you this guy is so full of himself, but the media started that “King James” ish and now his ego is about to explode. Win 3 – 4 championships in Cleveland, then you can put the “King” in front of James!!

Nobody cares what this dope does. Basketball = yawn.

  22. No Ring King - Jul 6, 2010 at 10:58 PM

Are you kidding me? The NBA has become Broadway now! This guy hasn’t even one won stinking championship yet! And he’s gonna cut one hour away from the World Cup?!? I’ll start caring about this Queen when he gets more rings then Dj Mbenga or Adam Morrison.

  23. Silas Kain - Jul 6, 2010 at 10:58 PM

Good for him. If he can get everyone’s knickers twisted in a knot and do something positive for charity, more power to him. Personally I don’t care where he plays. Unless, of course, he wants to come to Boston. Hey, Lebron, I got a pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow over there in Beantown. Come to Boston – Lebron James has a nice Irish ring to it!

  24. Syphi - Jul 6, 2010 at 11:09 PM

Tim you are right on the Money!!!.. I guess he will have 3 or 4 team caps on the table in front of him and then he will pick one!!!!.. Gimmie a break!!! This guy will NEVER win an NBA championship!!!

  25. sig229 - Jul 6, 2010 at 11:10 PM

Bottom line……………NOBODY and I MEAN NOBODY deserves the amount of money these teams are paying any athlete to PLAY A GAME! Hopefully at some point in time they will price themselves out of a job.
