Did Derrick Rose prefer Joe Johnson to LeBron James?

Jul 6, 2010, 8:38 AM EST

Thumbnail image for James_game2.jpgWould you rather have Joe Johnson or LeBron James on your team?

Exactly. It’s not even close. Even if you think there are flaws with LeBron’s game, there are far fewer than Johnson. LeBron is a true first option. Joe Johnson is a true second option on a title team. LeBron is a true max guy. Johnson is good but not max, except apparently in Atlanta.

But Chicago’s Derrick Rose apparently preferred Johnson to LeBron in Chicago.

That rumor was out there, confirmed this week by Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (via twitter).

(LeBron) really likes Rose & Noah. But there’s lack if shooters on roster. Also it doesn’t sound like he’s exactly being welcomed by Rose.

Didn’t say Rose was anti-LeBron. But the word is preference was Joe Johnson. They have same agent. That is what multiple people tell me.

You can see the trace of logic in there. LeBron is a guy who initiates the offense with the ball in his hands and needs to be surrounded by knockdown shooters. Rose is a guy who initiates the offense with the ball in his hands and needs to be surrounded by knockdown shooters. Rose and LeBron would have to figure out how to coexist and work well off the ball with each other. Joe Johnson can shoot the rock and is a more natural fit.

That said — are you kidding me?

LeBron is a transcendent, once-in-a-generation talent. These chances do not come along often, and if you get even a whiff of a chance to play with LeBron you take it. Say what you will about him, LeBron is having fun playing the game. You will have fun playing with him, and you will win a lot. There are not others like him and if you can get him to your team you recruit him like mad then happily give him the key to the franchise. He wants to sleep in your bed, you give him the condo. This is a rare opportunity.

Fit? That’s nice. It helps. But talent is the first real step to winning, and LeBron puts you three steps ahead of everyone else. Then you just need to figure out how not to let everyone else catch you (Cleveland hasn’t yet).

Come on Rose? JJ? Really?

I love LeBron- absolutely love him. Incredible talent. That said…
…I think Wade & Bosh make more sense for the Bulls. Wade is more of a pure scorer who can feed off of a PG like Rose. Bosh provides inside offense the Bulls haven’t had since Elton Brand left. Add Noah’s tenaciousness (as goofy as it is) and Rose’s ability to distribute and score off the dribble and you’ve really got something.
I also think taking a hard look at JJ Reddick makes a lot of sense for the Bulls. He’s a high-energy guy who seems to be finally transitioning the ridiculous shooting ability he had in college to the pros.
Rose, Reddick, Wade, Bosh and Noah looks like a starting 5 that can win multiple titles to me.

Wait what? Windhorst didn’t confirm a thing. He said “word is”…in other words…”there’s a rumor out there…”
So apparently “confirmation” consists of repeating a rumor until it’s considered true?

This is ridiculous. Sounds like some BS media coming out to try and detour LBJ from going to Chicago. Who would prefer Joe Johnson over D. Wade much less over LBJ. Stupid article.

How is a tweet from a Cleveland reporter confirmation of anything? He doesn’t even confirm the rumor in his tweet yet you report this like it is a confirmed fact. Getting pretty desperate for a story so you have to get info from the Cleveland PR machine. Pretty pathetic reporting.

  5. Noah - Jul 6, 2010 at 9:54 AM

Clearly planted as a rumor to give Cleveland fans a good feeling that he will stay, and maybe even a seed into LBJ camp that Rose isn’t “welcoming.” Give me a break, I can’t believe this was even posted. Rose’s reps were on Chi radio this morning stating this was clearly a stunt, actually laughing at how ludicrus this was.

Absolute RUMOR. It’s a CONFIRMED rumor. Amazing what people will say to get others riled up. “I heard that Rose wanted to play with Shaquille O’Neal as opposed to Lebron.”
    Desperate in Cleveland…

Ok, so we all listen to what a CLEVELAND sports writer says? This guy will say anything that won’t hurt his cred, and go some way toward keeping LBJ in Ohio so he has something to write about.

RUMOR! Here’s some fact for you! Watch what Derrick Rose said during an interview w/ Mouthpiece Sports.
Go to 1:05 to here the Q&A
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyba48ngmKE
In summary the reporter asks what the chances are of Lebron or Chris Bosh coming to Chicago.
Rose responds by saying “Just give me one of those players and I’ll be alright…They’ll be a fool if they don’t want to come [To Chicago].”
To say Rose would want a shooter…yeah sure that’s believable. To say he’d rather have JJ over LBJ doesn’t sound right or may be a misconception. This “tweet” from Brian Windhorst doesn’t make sense…did he call Rose and ask him questions? Is there documented proof of him saying this? I doubt that! All this “he said this…sources heard from this source…people believe nonsense should stop. You’re not reporting news…you’re creating fiction. Unless you provide proof of course ;)

Another writer thats been paid by a top flight dude(GM of Cleveland… Another fiction story to cause trouble between the two players……! :P

  12. BULLS LOVER <3 - Jul 7, 2010 at 5:38 PM

That is true. Rose would never say anything like that. But anyways, I would want Johnson more the James. I think James would’nt fit in the Bulls anyways. People all over the world think James is better than anyone, but if he goes against Michael Jordon.. then people would defintily change their minds. Remember that people. LEBRON JAMES IS NOT THE BEST PLAYER OF THE NBA. He’s is the best out of the 2009-2010 season, I must admit. So don’t take this the wrong way.
