Rasheed Wallace may come back. Sorry Celtics fans.

Jul 4, 2010, 12:08 PM EDT

Thumbnail image for Rwallace_sad.jpgDoc Rivers is back. Paul Pierce is back. Ray Allen is in negotiations to come back.

And now there is the “possibility” Rasheed Wallace might come back, too. That according to David Aldridge at NBA.com.

Celtics nation just got a little queasy. There is no love for him in Bean Town. Wallace battled through nagging injuries at age 35 last season and gave Boston 9 points and 22 minutes a game, but did it with just 41 percent shooting, 28 percent from three. His PER dropped to a below-league-average 13.1 (lowest since his rookie season). He was worse in the playoffs (10.4 PER, but his three point shooting did jump to 35 percent).

Boston fans were not feeling Wallace. And at $6.3 million next season, Celtics brass were not feeling him either (plus he is owed $6.7 million the year after that on a player option).

In the wake of Game 7 Doc Rivers said Sheed was thinking about retiring. He basically confirmed that a few days later.

But now he is thinking about coming back. Boston had been working to trade his salary — getting some player back in return for the other team getting salary relief when Wallace did retire. But no team is actually going to trade for Wallace the player at this point, he is the Celtics problem.

He is the one member of the band nobody was expecting to come back on tour. And nobody is really thrilled about it.

Rasheed has spent his whole career forsaking personal accolades to the betterment of every team he has been on… Any team in the NBA is better with Reasheed on their roster… At least he has the sense to totally disregard what the media has always said concerning him… one more instance of the media bashing him simply because he doesnt kiss their a**

What the hell is this guy talking bout? I hate the boston celtics but i love Rasheed Wallace. He brings toughness and 3 pt shooting to a team who didnt really have a big man that had offense other than kevin garnett. TERRIBLE ARTICLE

  3. MikeD - Jul 4, 2010 at 9:05 PM

    Kurt,
I wasn’t a big fan of Rasheed but he actually kind of grew on me during the playoffs. You’re not on target at all with your comments about Boston fans not liking him. Did you write this story just for a reaction?
    Celtics need to resign SCALABRINE!!

Not only do you talk funny but you are as stupid as you sound. MOST (not all) of you Celtics fans are idiots. In 2008 we didnt have our center at all. This year our center was playing on one leg the entire series and we still kicked your asses. Now I hear about bad calls ans Perkins missing game-7. If Bynum was had both legs the Lakers would of one in 5. Please Boston, please make it to finals next year so the Lakers can beat you again. Enjoy you 17 championships because you will not see anymore. Enjoy another 20 drought of sucking. You and your team are losers.

Like you, I LOVE MY TEAM. And like you, we have idiot fans that talk for us. THANK YOU for your honesty. As a lifelong Lakers fan, I am bred to hate the Celtics and for you it is vice-versa. You are obviously smart enough to not get caught up in the idiotic blame game. The Lakers won and the C’s lost. PERIOD. Next year I hope there is a rematch so the Lakers can beat you again and tie the score at 17 championships.

Even if Rasheed comes back, LAKERS will three-peat

  9. ocgunslinger - Jul 4, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Say what you will…..Rasheed is one guy that can tear you apart on the court. He is emotional but I would rather have emotion than apathy. I have been a Laker fan since 1960 and this last playoff series was tremendous. Too bad one team had to lose.

  10. NJim - Jul 4, 2010 at 11:02 PM

Is this guy serious?? I do hope Rasheed comes back too! In the playoffs, he was there when we needed him most, like he said he would. No need to say sorry to Celtic fans, cause by the looks of just about every other post here…WE’RE ALL HAPPY HE’S COMING BACK! Keep on trying to dirty Sheed’s name, we all know the deal. Next time speak for yourself instead of saying Celtic fans don’t want him back.

“You and your team are losers.” Really, dude. Way to win gracefully. I’ll be the first to admit that the Laker’s deserved to win that series and Gasol was the difference, IMO. Rondo didn’t have a great series and he’s just gonna get better. I don’t know if Bynum will ever be dependable for a season and the Laker’s front office knows that. Boston will be fine and while I won’t trash talk you like did the C’s fans, I will ask you this rhetorical question: Are you also a fan of the Yankees, Colt’s, and Red Wings? Thought so!

The writer of this article plainly knows nothing about basketball. Sheed almost saved us in game 7 with perkins out. He ran out of gas at the end but it was a vailent effort. I thought he played big in the playoffs and that was the entire reason he was on the team.
I assume the writer of this garbage probably thinks the Knicks are well run team and admires they way they have been put together. Its obvious he has no clue about what an important piece of the puzzle Wallace was in this playoff run.
Also hats off to the Lakers. I think with Perk we probably would have won, but we didnt, and congats to LA. Hopefully we do this again next year. It was one of the best series I have ever watched.

‘Sheed coming back ain’t all bad. He may not be the best during the regular season, but he played big when his team needed him the most in the finals. And that’s good enough for me.

  16. Rod Roberts - Jul 5, 2010 at 2:12 AM

actually no. born and raised L.A. through and through. fan of LA TEAMS only. I hope the LAKERS and celtics play for the title again.

The Cs gave him a 3-year contract (read: GAVE). Let them deal w/ him. The rest of the A will say thanks.

  20. alets - Jul 5, 2010 at 12:15 PM

I don’t understand why you celtics fans are so scared of Phil Jackson coming back. Anyone can win with MJ/scottie, Kobe/Shaq, Kobe/Gasol.

  21. JD - Jul 5, 2010 at 1:22 PM

Rasheed is a good bench player at this point of his career but at $6M he is overpaid. Sadly they will bring Ray Allen at $20M a year as well. He will be overpaid too. These are not moves that a team looking to get younger should be making. They are good players, but they will simply be not good enough to win next year with Orlando becoming more seasoned and Chicago making big free agent moves.

  22. JD - Jul 5, 2010 at 1:25 PM

Mike Brown can’t. He’s shown that during the playoffs, not knowing how to utilize LeBron-Jamison combo

  23. Drew - Jul 5, 2010 at 1:30 PM

I take the middle ground on the Rasheed retiring issue. I would say he had a lukewarm season – underacheiving regular season followed by some strong bench play in the postseason. But, one issue is that Rasheed was clearly out of shape for most of the season and even into the playoffs. Out of shape = injuries.
The problem is, even if Sheed comes back healthy and in shape, he’s a year older as are the rest of the Celtics. They need to get younger. They need inspired bench play who bring energy to the game. They need hustle players to compliment the scorers.

  24. ron - Jul 5, 2010 at 1:37 PM

hey kel, gasol had no choice to travel , he was fouled three times on the same play, after 3 pumps. his feet finally landed. you only see things one way which your way. by the way yoe want to whine about perkins injury, which i part of basketball. yoe did not mention if bynam did not have torn acl, it would never go 7 games. you cant have it both ways. wake up. you lost. rasheed sucks for 7 million.

  25. CelticsSuck - Jul 5, 2010 at 3:54 PM

Kel…you’re delisusional. Celtics were a few bad calls and a Perkins injury from winning another title??? You are somewhat touched in the head. The Lakers were a few bad calls and a Bynum injury away from SWEEPING the Celtics.
