Jazz extend qualifying offers to Fesenko, Matthews

Jun 29, 2010, 4:58 PM EDT

According to the Associated Press, the Utah Jazz will extend qualifying offers to both Kyrylo Fesenko and Wesley Matthews. Because they extended the offers, the Jazz now have the right to match any offers Fesenko and Matthews receive in free agency.

Matthews, an undrafted rookie, was an extremely pleasant surprise for the Jazz last season. Matthews averaged 9.4 points and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 38.2% from beyond the arc. Jerry Sloan relied on Matthews heavily during the playoffs, and Matthews averaged 37.1 minutes per game in the postseason.
The 23-year old Fesenko didn’t have the kind of success Matthews did, and also didn’t set the NBA on fire when he had to replace Mehmet Okur during last year’s playoffs. But Fesenko is big, young, alive, and should be cheap, which makes him worth keeping.
