Wojnarowski: Sarver interviews Lindsay for Suns GM spot

Jun 28, 2010, 7:24 PM EST

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver will interview Spurs assistant general manager Jeff Lindsey for Phoenix’s vacant GM spot. However, sources tell Wojnarowski that Sarver’s overly hands-on approach to ownership might have Lindsay hesitant to accept the job:

Lindsey is the frontrunner for the position, sources said, but it’s unclear how enthusiastic he is for a job that Sarver has shown an increasing desire to do himself. The owner’s financial straights were a primary reason why former Suns GM Steve Kerr left to return to television…
… Sources said Sarver isn’t in a rush to make the hire and that he’ll accompany coach Alvin Gentry to Los Angeles on Tuesday to make a final pitch to All-Star forward Amar’e Stoudemire(notes). Sarver has made clear to several people that he’ll run the free agency and trade front for the organization until Kerr’s successor is hired.
“He wants to be front and center right now,” one Western Conference executive said. “He wouldn’t let Kerr and Griff [former assistant GM David Griffin] do their jobs.”

Assuming Wojnarowski’s sources are accurate, this would be another example of a team owner attempting to take direct control of his team’s basketball operations. For better or for worse, the guys spending the big dollars are making more and more of the basketball decisions once left to team presidents and general managers.
