Quote of the Day: Big Baby's motivation speech

Jun 16, 2010, 8:10 AM EDT

Thumbnail image for Davis_drool.jpg“We went through too many ups and downs to lose like this,” Davis said. “Out of all the teams in the league we were the one that struggled. We were the one that went through the bumps and bruises. We went through the, ‘we’re old.’ We went through the ‘oh, they can’t play, they’re going to get beat by Cleveland, get beat by Orlando.’ We’re here now, in spite of what everyone else thinks.

“So you think we’re just going to let this go? No. We accept the challenge to win the championship. We want it. It’s that point blank simple. We could have gave up a long time ago. We could have gave up a long time ago and looked forward to next year. But no, we’re here. So we’re going to take it while we are here. We understand we’ve been through the ups and down and deserve it more than them.”

–Glen “Big Baby” Davis, on why the Celtics will step up in Game 7.

  1. kwc - Jun 16, 2010 at 8:52 AM

“deserve it more than them” – ah, the moral side of sports. Any talk of deserving to win more than the other team strikes me as muddle headed and rather feeble motivation.

  2. Professoressa - Jun 16, 2010 at 8:53 AM

Oh, so Big Baby, the Celtics had no intention to accept the challenge to win the championship in Game 6??
I really can’t stand motivational speeches made by role players.

  3. jaydee - Jun 16, 2010 at 9:56 AM

No team “deserves” the NBA championship. It’s the team that goes out and plays hard and with heart and “earns” it that will win the championship. May the best team win!
    That said, go Lakers!!!

  4. Barry Tesar - Jun 16, 2010 at 1:54 PM

What do you think allowed Muhammad Ali to withstand George Foreman’s Sledgehammer blows all those years ago in Africa? It was because he knew he had struggled so much over the years to get to this spot and he was not going to be denied no matter what it took. These Celtics were counted out many times, especially against both LaBron and Super Man, but they are still hanging around. Look for Big Baby and the Celtics to Shock the World come Thursday night

  5. Lakers4Lyfe - Jun 16, 2010 at 2:21 PM

Get this slobbering idiot — with his sense of entitlement — off the court, please … The more you think about his nickname (Big Baby), the more the quote makes sense. But it’s exactly this attitude from Boston that Lakers fans can’t stand. One more reason for the Lakers to rip this guys heart out in game 7.
As if the Celtics pre-printed chamionship hats and t-shirts stuffed away in the locker room at Staples Center weren’t enough motivation. Someone should write a story about that … the only news I’ve seen on the hats and t-shirts for the Celtics came from the Lakers website in an interview with the assistant coach yesterday. Jinxed and karma. Celtics did it to themselves.

  6. Shark Padlock - Jun 16, 2010 at 2:44 PM

Wow. Isn’t it amusing how Lakers fans troll the Celtics stories and post jibberish against Boston?
I think Boston has a shot at winning on Thursday. Will it be tough ? Sure. Do the Lakers have an advantage? Heck yeah. But really…the Lakers probably won’t play as well on Thursday and the Celts won’t play as badly. Will it be enough? Only time will tell.

  7. queenie - Jun 16, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Oh what’s a little personality going to hurt? He feels that way and if it motivates the team to rise up against the purple giants, I’m all for it. Talk about slobbering idiots, the analysts and reporters are non-stop fawning over Kobe. One way or another, I’m looking forward to that ending soon.

    Comments from kwc, Professoressa, Lakers4Lyfe:
F#$%^&* all three of you; especially “Lakers4Lyfe”. If a role player wants to step up & say something, he has that right; especially if he’s talking the talk on the court as well. Big Baby’s got game & neither of you can whip him on the court!!!
Why are you all so damn sarcastic?? Stop hating!!!!!!
Lakers4Lyfe, the Celtics will stomp mud holes in your Lakers.

  9. Blake - Jun 16, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Really? Comparing Celtics-Lakers to Ali’s struggles? Really?!?

  10. J. R. Shaw - Jun 16, 2010 at 6:23 PM

In case you didn’t already know Davis’s nickname derives more from his unusually round face and frequent (off-court, anyway) grins, not from any lack of maturity.

They had a pedestrian regular season…they were seeded in the middle of the east…they weren’t suppose to get past LeBron and Cleveland…they weren’t suppose to get past Howard and Orlando…THEY HAVE TAKEN THE PRESENT NBA CHAMPIONS TO A 7TH GAME IN THE FINALS!!! YOU TELL’EM GLEN!
    LET’S GO CELTICS!

role players sometimes become star players due to their motivation skills and unwillingness to give up

  15. GarnettFan4Lfe - Jun 16, 2010 at 8:38 PM

I think he means deserves it more because if hard work, not because of “god given right” or because they are owed it to fall in theur lap….Laker fan are ya?

  16. jonars - Jun 17, 2010 at 2:32 AM

well, all things said and done… the LAKERS are a damn good team, but still, CELTICS to win game 7 and the NBA championship this season… at least i’m praying for this, GODbless CELTICS team!!!

  17. mar - Jun 17, 2010 at 9:12 AM

The Fakers have never beaten the Celtics in a game 7…ever!!! Will this be the first time? If so, it should count as a miracle because that’s the only way the Fakers can prevail over the Celtics…thru a miracle. And oh…I hope the Fakers didn’t fill up Staples Center with thousands of balloons like they once did in anticipation of a win which never came, huh, Fakers4Lyfe? LA SUCKS, BOSTON ROCKS!!! GO CELTICS!!! The most popular team in the Philippines!!!

  18. Loc - Jun 17, 2010 at 12:29 PM

If I hear one more person play “pre-printed championship hats and t-shirts” card, I think I’m going to puke. Have you people never watched a championship game in any sport? After a team wins a championship, there are always hats and t shirts waiting for them. Immediately. Do you think if the Lakers win tonight they’re going to call a printer and get some hats designed, produced, and delivered in the two minutes between the final horn and the locker room? EVERY team that goes into a clinching game has the stuff pre-made. It’s not even a choice. Get with it.

  19. Anonymous - Jun 17, 2010 at 2:55 PM

LETS GO CELTICS. FLAKERS WILL NOT WIN GAME 7 NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL……… KOBE CANT WIN BY HIMSELF AND THE OTHER MEMBERS MAKE BETWEEN 4-6 POINTS PER GAME. 22. romedog - Jun 17, 2010 at 6:42 PM

Celtics in 7. Too tough, too ready. Lakers are a weak hollywood show. I wouldnt be surprised if some of them were gay. Weak ass Gasol is going to be a rag doll tonight just like in 08…Celtic will punk the pretty boy Lakers.

  23. CELTICLADY - Jun 17, 2010 at 7:36 PM

Thanks you Romedog . Glad Im not the only one. laker are scare to be physical because they may break a nail on their freshly manicured hands. lol

  24. Anonymous - Jun 20, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Lakers won with nothing but sorry a** free throws they dragged through the whole game not even ball hog Kobe could make the shots! Nothing but fouls called on Celtics by that ref that was blind by all the fouls on the Lakers, u may have won the championship but you didn’t do it by “going out and playing hard and with heart and “earned” it”… you caught up and time ran out. Lakers are and will always be a one-man team and with that being said Go Celtics the best team in the NBA… look it up.
