NBA finals, Lakers Celtics Game 6: Lamar Odom has the flu

Jun 15, 2010, 8:49 AM EDT

Thumbnail image for odom_bench.jpgThis time, there may actually be a reason for Lamar Odom’s quiet night.

Odom started feeling sick with flu-like symptoms on Saturday and did not feel better during his 8-point performance in Game 5 Sunday. He hoped to be felling better for Game 6, he told Lisa Dillman at the Los Angeles Times.

“I haven’t been sick all season … now I’m sick in the Finals,” said Odom after the Lakers’ 92-86 loss to the Celtics here in Game 5. “Had to put my hard hat on just to get out of bed. It was tough.

“I’m not feeling good, but I’m not making any excuses. I’ve just got to be ready to play.”

Odom has played better than any of the other Lakers bench players. Which is about like saying you’re the best of the Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitchers — it doesn’t mean you’ve been any good.

If the Lakers are going to force a Game 7, they will need a healthy Lamar Odom. Both his body and his game.

As someone who lives in LA, went to two home games this season, and saw every other Laker game on local TV (not like a lot of the commenters who just saw some playoff games on TNT this year), I need to say this:
The season started off absolutely awesome for the Purple and Gold. Gasol was eating them up and playing like the great big man he could definitely be, they beat the crap out of Portland at home, which any local Laker fan knows is a real accomplishment, especially since they did it without Kobe. When Kobe did return, he hit 7 game winning last shots. The were truly playing like World Champs.
But then the problems started: they started playing lethargic, lazy and lackadaisical. At post-game interviews, after they were beat badly by a second rate team they always gave a bunch of “in denial” excuses and never accepted responsibility for their horrible play. Mid-season when they could’ve traded Farmar, Morrison, Powell, Walton, Vujacic, and (all he can do is dunk) Shannon Brown, and gotten two super top-notch players to help Kobe, they didn’t do it. Trust me another quick 6′ 6” shooting guard who could also penetrate and break donw defenses and a take-no-prisoners power forward who could off/def rebound would have done the trick just nicely thank you.
Many true Laker fans knew they were in trouble at the Christmas Day massacre when they just gave up on even trying against the Cavs.
When the Lakers beat the Suns and Oklahoma….they were at their best…..but THAT Laker team rarely shows up unless they absolutely have to. and don’t even get me started on bi-polar “no you see him most times you don’t” Odom! Every Laker far including myself was disgusted by the saliva drooling of that idiot known as big baby and the thuggish napoleon complex of nate robinson…but you know what? at least they showed some intensity. in the last two games the Lakers with the exception of Kobe, have been looking like they don’t even care!
I still say the Lakers in 7……because if Gasol, Fisher, and Odom get going, they’re an impossible team to beat with Kobe….but only if the real team that actually WANTS to win a championship and work hard for it shows up.

  2. puresportfacts - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:20 PM

There comes a time in every big game when one side admits that they are just not strong or good enough and the other is just a better TEAM. Gasol showed it behind Big Baby’s Orca yell. Fisher/choke artist Artess flopping all overthe court. Even Fonie Kobe in postgame interview using foul word( that high school spoiled brat ). The team with the most class will win this next game. Be ready for some Wailing arms, arguing amongs players pointing fingers and if Boston can put on enough pressure L.A. will have the biggest fall out in N.B.A. history.

  3. Lakers Minus Odom - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:22 PM

Hey John #46, you hit it off the ballpark with that comment. The Lakers cannot afford another year of not knowing which games in the playoffs when Odom will get lucky. The “Lucky” reference also suits Odom very well. He is truly lucky when he gets a good game, which probably happens during ecah blue moon cycles. Hey Raptors, Odom and Walton for Bosh? What do you all think?

  4. FMB - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:26 PM

I am not a Laker fan at all but What the Hell does Lamars wife have to do with the game? That is so ignorant to talk bad about peoples family. You are the ones that are ugly! GO BOSTON!!!

  5. PIRATE FAN - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:28 PM

Hey, don’t pickon the Pirates!! They don’t play basketball, not that what they do should be called baseball either…..

  6. Greg - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:29 PM

Funny thing is with the Ancient Celtics is these old guys are up 3-2 and will close out tonight. People like Omnius keep calling them old yet Kobe is practically the same age as the Big Three and the Ancient Celtics are healthier then those overrated YOUNG Lakers. Sucks to be young and fragile like the Lakers. After tonight and their second loss in the Finals in three years to the Ancient Celtics we’ll just change the name of the Los Angeles Kobe’s to the Los Angeles losers.

  8. Odom For Bosh - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:37 PM

Lakers Minus Odom, I’m with you on this one. Bosh is looking to be in championship contention so the Raptors will not be able to hang on to him and he was also at a Laker playoff game this season. Hey Mitch, are you working this?

  9. EastCoastBBall - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:41 PM

Well Lakers fans, your moment of truth is upon you, and you can’t handle the truth. The following facts you can’t deny: Kobe and Fish are the only true gamers that can handle pressure moments. When the heat is on, the rest of the Lakers wilt. Kobe is a great player, but the Celtics are a great TEAM. Great teams always beat great players. Just ask Wilt Chamberlain (RIP) how he fared against the Celtics in his day with him and another Lakers star (Elgin Baylor, Jerry West) going 2 v 5.
I said it from the start on the PBT threads, and now it’s obvious. Just look at the interviews. Lamar Odom, Artest, all of them. “I’m not worried”, “Just another game”. If that doesn’t tell you the result in advance, nothing will. So for all of you naysayers who dissed my 20 out of 22 last Finals predictions, I have a special prediction for you. IT’S OVER TONIGHT IN GAME 6 because the Lakers have no heart!

  10. FinalsProphecy - Jun 15, 2010 at 2:44 PM

    Guaranteed!!!
    Tonight and Thursday:
Average numbers to Lakers winning it all -
    Kobe – 33 points
Gasol – 25 points and is a “swat” machine (as in blocked shots)
    Odom (that’s right) – 17 points
    Fish – 15 points
Artest – 12 points (and harasses the hell out of Pierce and Rondo)
Bynum – Not much of anything tonight…21 on Thursday
    Bench – Just don’t piss it away…
Remember the “We are the Champions” tune that belted throughout the Great Western Forum during the 80′s hey day…bring it on back starting tonight….
You will thank me for this info come late Thursday evening. Boston, thank you for the memories…but beating you this year IS LAKER’S DESTINY!!!!!

  11. Bob - Jun 15, 2010 at 3:30 PM

All I can say is we heard the same crap from the Cavs fans and then the Orlando fans. Lakers get your golf clubs dusted off because the better TEAM, the Celtics, will win again tonight.
That’s the prediction you can take to the bank FinalsProphecy! Not that pipe dream you posted above. And as for this being Hollywood, sorry no trick photography in the NBA.

  12. pecky69 - Jun 15, 2010 at 3:30 PM

Lakers would bring it home, this is Hollywood.

  13. Sharpshooter - Jun 15, 2010 at 3:51 PM

Yo John #46, I see some people here commenting on your post. You are absolutely right. It’s hard to be a Laker fan with Lucky (Odom) on the floor. What was the Laker organization thinking? What has this guy done for the Lakers in these 3 playoff seasons? Not a damn thing. The guy is completely worthless as a player and nobody knows when he will show up. In this playoff series, he only showed up once against the Suns with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Is this as good as it gets for Odom. Is this what the Lakers want going into next season? I agree with the guys on this thread that we should go after Bosh and do it immediately.

  14. Lamar Owed Them - Jun 15, 2010 at 4:16 PM

Like John 46 said, the fans are getting restless and Lamar (Owed Them) Odom to the Lakers to just go away. We need players to show up in the Laker team. Show up or just go away! Any takers out there in the NBA for Lamar (Owed Them) Odom? The Lakers can’t afford paying him that much anymore not to know when he will show up.

  15. SCfool - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:02 PM

This Celtics team is a buch of cry babies, led by the biggest cry baby of them all, Doc Rivers. After the Lakers won game 1 all you heard from the Celtics was “WAWAWAWAAAAA! The refs screwed us!” Pierce was even mad enough to punch a ref. What happened? The officiating turned in the Celtics favor. But you didn’t hear the Lakers crying. Why? They have class, unlike the Celtics and thier fans.

  16. Raiderruth - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:06 PM

Either way we have been in the finals 3 years in a row that as got to say something!!!!! I still love the Lakers and always will
win or lose! F— the celtics.

  17. ken - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:11 PM

Laker fans all use the same argument in order to justify winning the next 2 games! They all use the reasoning that they are 12-1 at home and they have 2 home games left, so the lakers are in a good position. They forget that single loss came from the Celtics in LA, just 3 games ago! How are you going to use a stat like that to explain a win? Here’s a stat, Celtics are 11-0 when they are ahead 3-2 in the playoffs. So which stat will prevail? Stats don’t win games…players win games…and if kobe doesn’t get enough help…well, then the bottles are gonna be poppin’ in Boston.

  18. NBA's Fantastic - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:13 PM

For all the guys on this forum who is trash talking on Odom – thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. The guy sucks! Lamar Odom is our second Kwame Brown who we traded for Pau Gasol in February ’08. Overpaid, over-rated and a classic under-performer. He will only get worse next season.

  19. Marcus - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:32 PM

Amen. I thought I was the only one who noticed.

  20. Love Of The Game - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:38 PM

Reading through these comments, one thing that troubles me is that people are complaining about Lamar Odom in the Lakers. ARE YOU ALL SURE THAT LAMAR ODOM IS A LAKER? Watching the Lakers vs Celtics Finals, I keep thinking that he was a Celtic. He is playing right into their hands. I think that he is actually their sixth man in disguise in purple and gold…..LOL.

  21. Marcus - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Nothing. They’ve already squandered it once this series.

  22. LAKER'S ALL THE WAY - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:52 PM

  24. Dunkman - Jun 15, 2010 at 6:01 PM

Celtics have the best team and play better together. The only way they will lose will be if the refs protect Kobe and put the fouls on the big 3. Prediction: Lakers will win……thanks to refs and homer conditions.

  25. Go Lakers - Jun 15, 2010 at 6:32 PM

    Hey guys,
Stop the Lamar Odom hating! He can’t help it if he is a second rate player. Some people were born to be great, like Kobe Bryant, while others become Lamar Odom.
