NBA finals, Lakers Celtics Game 6: For Boston, it is win now or never

Jun 15, 2010, 1:20 PM EDT

Pierce_celebrates.jpgThere’s the math, and then there is the reality.

The math says Boston needs to win just one of the two games in Los Angeles to win the title. They won Game 2, they’ve proven they can win on this floor. History says they can do it — the won a Game 7 in Los Angles back in 1969.

The reality is the Celtics want no part of a Game 7.

Right now, the Celtics have the Lakers frustrated and on the ropes. Their defensive intensity has left the Lakers dumbfounded on offense, forcing Kobe Bryant to try and do it all himself. The Celtics bench brings the energy the Lakers do not. Boston has all the momentum.

Lose Game 6 and that momentum swings. The Lakers become confident again. Plus, home teams win Game 7s more often than the Celtics want to think about.

Boston has done a fantastic job on defense, realizing that Andrew Bynum is not a real threat right now and no longer fearing to help off of him as they did in the first couple games. The Lakers don’t have an answer for that — Boston has worn down Pau Gasol with the tag team of Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Garnett. Bynum can’t help. Lamar Odom is… Lamar Odom. Ron Artest is in the corner hesitating then shooting threes.

Boston needs to come out, set the tone defensively tonight, keep the Lakers on the perimeter. Own the paint. Boston has to continue to dominate on the glass, they need to board like madmen. Then they need to run, to get Rajon Rondo in the open court and Paul Pierce at the three-point line. The Celtics need to get back in transition defense — they are not going to shoot like they did in Game 5, and the Lakers will be looking to get some easy buckets. Boston needs to get them to slow down and face their half-court defense. Which is a wall.

Boston needs to do it tonight. A Game 7 can be fluky, can turn on little things and lucky bounces. The kind of things that go to the home team. The kind of things that go to a confident team. Right now, the Lakers are not that. Close them out in Game 6 and the get banner 18. Keep the momentum.

Because if the Lakers get confident, if they feel they have figured it out, if they force a Game 7, things will feel very different. They will look different. Plus Boston doesn’t really want to risk facing what Kobe Bryant could do in one game with it all on the line.

“DOES YOUR MAMA KNOW HOW STUPID YOU SOUND??? NEVER MIND I’LL ASK HER TONITE WHILE WE PREPARE FOR GAME 7!!!!!”
A “Yo Mama” Joke…seriously? Who is this Wilmer Valderrama? Thats the best you got? HAHA! PITIFUL.
Dude…do yourself a favor and prepare yourself for game 6 first….there isnt going to be a game 7. After tonight Kobe will be on the next flight to Colorado to find a new victim to add to his list….he better buy his wife another diamond. Gasol will spend the off season trying to convince people he isnt a Llama. Ron Ron will be picking his nose trying to learn how to play defense like the Celtics, Fisher will be crying himself to sleep, Bynum will be creating a list of more excuses as to why his knee hurts and the “ZEN” Master Phil Jackson will hopefully ride his bike off a cliff. And of course you – DCLAKERFAN – you’ll be going thru jokes from 20 years ago trying to find something to write back on this message board. Please no Monica Lewinsky jokes you stupid hack! You Suck – just like your team!

Here are the facts. Some of the referring has been suspect, but have favored BOTH teams at different times. So let’s cut that outof the equation and just call the ref’ing a draw. For Laker fans that think that Boston can’t win at your home court, news flash! They did already! How can you say they can’t when they already did! And Boston fans, stop abbreviating Celtics with “Cs”. It’s annoying…you can spell out FLakers, but you can’t spell out Celtics? or Boston?
I think Boston might actually win this tonight. Only because if Kobe has to score another 40+ pts, that means that Gasol, Odom, Bynum, and Fisher didn’t get enough points individually and Kobe will have to score 46% of the entire Laker’s score like he did Game 5. Lakers will not win games this way. On the other hand, I think Rondo is a little overrated this series, and it was the likes of Nate Robinson that actually helped rally Boston back last game. If Rondo can’t shoot a jumper or freethrows (which we all know he is terrible at) then that’s a lot of defensive rebounds for the Lake Show and more opportunities for them to score.
Now that the facts are out on the table…Boston in 6! lol. Oh, and if I have to see another fisher flop, or artest flop…I say we implement jeff van gundy’s suggestion and penalize people for flopping.

“The fading breath of fleeting fate, tis death for you which now awaits.” mine own. THe Lakers are destine for the tar pits.

No predictions here. I’m just hoping that the Lakers can somehow play like they did in game 1. If they can win tonight then they’ll be likely to win game 7. This point is about the only thing that I liked about Helin’s article. He’s obviously a Celtics fan. I hate the Celtics. I’ve hated them for 50 years. And, based on some of the ridiculous calls that were made in the TD Garden, it seemed like we were back in the old Garden in 1960, when a visiting team couldn’t get fair officiating even if they brought their own refs with them. Go Lakers!!!!

  5. LAKER MAN - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:16 PM

Celtics fans call in work on friday and tell them your feeling purple and gold. You dont feel good, your stomach hurts cause the LAKERS MAKE YOU SICK AFTER THEY WHOOP ON BOSTON AND SNATCH THAT TROPHY !!!
    LAKER MAN;
HEY BOSS, hey its your employee. . .. . im throwing up purple and gold !!! I dont know whats wrong with me. Ill tell you !!!! YOUR FROM BOSTON !!!!! THAT ISH WOULD MAKE ME SICK TOO IF I WAS FROM THERE !!! GO LAKERS !!!!

  6. Angela - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:18 PM

I’m rooting for another round of “grand theft Rondo” tonight

  7. Ted - Jun 15, 2010 at 5:19 PM

Pau Gasol? Dude needs to just play ball, and stop ALWAYS trying to draw the foul by screaming at the top of his lungs every time he attempts a bucket. And Artest is way too tentative – if you have the shot – take it! What it comes down to is 12 men in green vs. 1 man in gold – and the Lakers are much too reliant on Kobe. I’m a born & raised Bostonian – I don’t hate the Lakers – I respect them. They make MY team play at their best, and every Boston / L.A. series has always lived up to the hype. But this ain’t the Lakers’ year. Boston’s got this wrapped up.

  8. kevinman - Jun 15, 2010 at 6:45 PM

kobe bryant needs to stop being s little girl and show off and start playing real ball.i dont see paul pierce doing that.

  9. sjerger - Jun 15, 2010 at 6:48 PM

    Your an idiot.

  10. Jodeman - Jun 15, 2010 at 6:53 PM

What are you yelling? We can hear you. Save the yelling for when my Celtics win tonight. Then you can yell. And kick the cat!

  11. obvious - Jun 15, 2010 at 6:59 PM

No, I am not a Red Sox fan, idiot. Good thing you know what you’re talking about, I thought we were in trouble there. Speaking of TVs, you may want to go to your DVR and look at Kobe anytime he misses. Whine rate is quite high. Enter hypocrite. Pamela Handerson, meet Kobe Bryant. He’s all you’ve got.

  12. Joshua G. de Leon - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:02 PM

Lakers will WIN tonight [game 6] and eventually they will win the championship…THEY’VE GOT ALL THE TALENT THAT CAN’T STOP BOTH THE STARTING FIVE AND THE BENCH OF THE BOSTON CELTICS!

  14. Jodeman - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:09 PM

One thing is for sure, no matter what team your going for (If it aint the Celtics, then you’re an idiot); watching Kobe play is magical. He can make some shots that have a person saying ‘WTF, how did he do that?!’ He is amazing. But like I said in the beginning, Celtics in 6 cuz they have the best TEAM and the bench has been playing lights out ball! Celtics wrap it up tonight but it will be close. Man, if Allen and Rondo show along with Garnett and Pierce and the rest of this sweet Celtics team, then it wont even be close no matter how well Kobe plays.
    Go Celtics!

  15. Jodeman - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:11 PM

Much better. The first one made you sound retarded. But hey, you are going for the Lakers.

  16. Ciltic for life - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:13 PM

You said that the lakers would protect home court something Celtics didnt do for 3 games. Lakers didnt even do it for 2 games. If i remember right lakers lost game to leaving only one game won at home.

  17. GloLin - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:20 PM

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Lakers4Lyfe - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:23 PM

Oh man … the Celtics made one huge mistake already before the game. Printing t-shirts and hats that say World Champions and bringing them into Staples Center and the Celtics locker room for the planned celebration. Good luck with that! Talk about jinx, holy %%$#! I can’t even believe Doc Rivers let that happen. When you lose tonight, blame your coach.

  19. Rae - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:26 PM

“THE LAKERS ARE GOING TO WIN!! WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE THE LAKERS ALWAYS DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO TO WIN!! ”
Seriously want to stick with that statement? Go look at Lakers finals records vs. Celtics finals record. They have been to 30 finals and won 15. The Celtics have been in 20 finals and won 17.
I like to say: “The Celtics go big or go home. The Lakers? Sometimes they go big, but sometimes they go home.”

Gasol should be wearing a skirt out on the court. Hes as hard as a day old bagel.

  21. Anonymous - Jun 15, 2010 at 7:53 PM

i dont think ron artest and lamar odam are bad god gasol is the one that needs to play harder hes up and down one game hes good the next hes horrible and trust me kobe willl dodo it all lol

  22. john wong - Jun 15, 2010 at 8:13 PM

if bynum were healthy, lakers would be up 3-2 right now and would kill the celtics tonight. as it were, lakers will still pull it off in 7.

  23. Ray - Jun 15, 2010 at 8:16 PM

Gee, do you have to be such a garbagemouth?

  24. Desch - Jun 15, 2010 at 8:22 PM

Lakerman, I’m just wondering how you think the Refs favored the Celts in all the games in Boston. In game 5 (arguably the most important game in the series thus far) the Lakers attempted 26 free throws, the Celts 13. Seems like the Celtics got called for a lot more fouls? Also you said the Lakers have a “descent” defense? You’re right, their defense on the descent. Descent means on the way down, getting worse, etc. Look it up in the dictionary if you don’t believe me. And I won’t stoop to telling anyone to F off. Classy you are!
