NBA finals, Lakers Celtics: Who is the MVP?

Jun 14, 2010, 3:41 PM EDT

Thumbnail image for bryant_game2.pngUsually five games into an NBA finals, we have a pretty good idea who is going to get the finals MVP award.

This finals? Good luck. You’d have an easier time naming all 11 starters on the Slovenian national soccer team.

Really, the only consistently good player on both sides has been Kobe Bryant. The guy who tried to carry the Lakers to victory in Game 5 by himself during the third quarter. Win or lose, Kobe has been there, scoring 29 points or more in four of the five games. It has not always been efficient scoring, but he has been the one player who has attacked in each and every game.

The last guy to win Finals MVP on the losing team? Jerry West in the 1969 finals, when the Lakers lost in seven games to the Celtics at the old Great Western Forum. That was a group of more talented Lakers losing out to a better team in the Celtics.

For the Celtics, who do you pick?

Rajon Rondo has been the leader of their offense in terms of setting up, and he took over the second half of Game 4. Kevin Garnett has had two good offensive games and again remains key to the Celtics defense that has them ahead. Paul Pierce has had a couple good games now, but was missing the first half of the series. Ray Allen had a record setting night and a horrific night. Big Baby?

Maybe the referees for their influence on games?

The winner of the award may well be the guy that takes over Game 7. (Because you just have a feeling with these teams it is going to get there.) But if the vote were conducted now, we might need the Electoral College to come in because there would be know clear winner.

Y’all are smokin’. It’s Rondo all the way. Dude is like the Tasmanian Devil. He’s EVERYWHERE. He runs circles around the Lakers just like he did around the Magic, just like he did around the Cavaliers. Regardless of who wins the Finals, it’s Rondo not Kobe. Kobe is selfish and attitudinal and doesn’t motivate his team at all. It could also be the entire team because as most people on here say – they are a true team – unselfish, not worried about their statistics, just focused on the win. But ultimately, it can’t be anybody but Rondo. Dude is a beast and only 24.

Celtics- RONDO! Kid’s been on fire during the whole playoffs…and I like the vote for the Celtics bench. They’ve been awesome during the finals too!
Lakers- Kobe, I guess, since he’s doing 95% of the playing for the whole team.

I think most Kobe haters spend to much time talking about everything but basketball when it boils down. If you look at his shooting most of the time he is accused of taking a lot of shots is when he gets a pass and the time clock is down under 5 seconds. Very rarely do you see him just come down and take a shot with more then 15 seconds. Then we contiunue to make excuses for guys that are being paid millions of dollars to make baskets, to drive to the hole and to make foul shots. When it’s all said and done their is not a team in the NBA that had the opportunity to get Kobe would not want him on their team. You can not get mad after 14 years of watching this guy play because he wants to win. We try to compare guys the wrong way the league is much different from when Bill Russell played as when Jerry West play as when Magic Johnson and Bird played as when Michael Jordan played. If the lose the series it’s Kobe fault, if they win the series these same people will be bragging how great a player he is. Put feelings a side most don’t know him other than what they hear or read, he is a great player and will be in the HALL OF FAME like it or not.

If the Lakers win it should be Paul Gasol not Kobe.Kobe is not the only one on the team by himself.Paul is playing just well as Kobe.If the Celtics win it should be Rondo.

Okay, if you want to make the argument that the Celtics won simply because of a corrupted officiating crew, fine. I can’t prove or disprove the underhand dealings of the NBA. However, despite poor officiating, Bryant still should not win the award granted a Celtics victory in game seven.
There will always be arguments on the officiating of NBA games, partly because basketball is such a difficult sport to judge given its fluidity and quick pace. So try to keep the referees out of this.
