NBA finals, Lakers Celtics Game 5: Note to Phil Jackson, the Celtics can win games in the fourth quarter, too

Jun 14, 2010, 1:00 AM EDT

Lakers_huddle.jpgThis is what Phil Jackson (wearing a mic) told his team during a fourth-quarter time out, as the Lakers were making a fourth-quarter run.

“(Boston) loses more games in the fourth quarter than any team in the league. They know how to lose games, and they’re showing us that now.”

They also know how to win games. They were winning all the 50/50 balls. Kevin Garnett is going into a pile with three Lakers and coming out of it with a jump ball. (Which he lost to Derek Fisher, another sign of how weird this series has become.)

Paul Pierce was catching bad-decision inbound passes then hitting a streaking Rajon Rondo going to the hoop. Kendrick Perkins was coming down with offensive rebounds when the game was on the line. Rondo was diving into the crown to save balls, then he was out-jumping two taller Lakers for offensive rebound tip-ins.

We have seen flashes of that from the Lakers in their wins, but not in the last two games. Lately all the energy, all the hustle plays have been Boston’s. The Celtics have been the scrappy ones. At this point in the series, the teams know each other so well there are no real Xs and Os adjustments to make, it is all about execution and hustle plays.

Boston made them in the fourth quarter. And if they make them in the fourth quarter Tuesday night they will hang banner 18.

what a DUMB ARTICLE… the players and coaches can say what they want.. u do your job and write about basketball and the game… or maybe u don’t know nothing about the game of basketball but your gossips….get a life.

Kobe won’t have another 38 point game Tuesday night…it won’t happen. It only happened because Doc coached his team to let him go off and concentrate on the blocks for the rest of the team.
“Naht-gah-dah!” – Dana Carvey George Bush impression (not gonna happen)

To all of you who disagreed with my description of Paul, shave your face cuz you can’t grow a beard, Pierce. I’m sorry, even Boston fans dry heave when the flopper tries to grow one. The actress/primadonna (I think it’s two n’s)shoves his head back and forth trying to sell a foul, and it’s the ugliest thing in the NBA. YES, Fisher does it as well, but he looks good doing it. That is the difference. And tell your Boston degenerate to STOP throwing things on the court. We are not in Northern Ireland.
Again! This series is not over. Boston fans throwing things on the court? NUF SAID….
Nate Robinson an Alien is hilarious! Paul Pierce is a baby…all know it….his game is ugly….compare him to KOBE…a simple question: could Paula Pierce score the way KOBE did last night? Hec no…he is as slow as Kendrick Perkins laterally.
Beautiful people in LA…oh absolutely…..who wants to live in frigid weather? California is and will be the best place to live.
Back to basketball: Boston fans are already complaining about not getting any calls in game 6. It’s hilarious! Of course you won’t. It’s home cooking. If you guys wanted to get some calls at home, maybe you would have played better in the regular season and not lost to the NETS and give up so MANY 4th quarter leads.
Which brings up back to the thread title.
    NUF SAID.

No one cares. Only the losers still whine about the Pats. Old news, overstated, and largely stupid on the part of BB…but only the weenies supporting loser teams bring it up any more.

This is precisely why we should not be miking these coaches. What they say in the huddle or the locker room is their business only. The decision to mic the coaches and the follow-up criticism by the media is ruining the game.

  6. Azucar - Jun 14, 2010 at 1:17 PM

And you in the east keep waiting for us in the WEST to get home from work, sunshine, and surfing for any sports event to begin. We get it primetime while you guys have to stay up to almost midnight watching a game.
It begins at 8 on Tue and Thur for you? We get to BBQ at 5 and even have time to spend with family or go out. There has to be no sick leave left for any sports fan in the east. You are comatose in the morning.

Please unbunch your knickers. And watch out for all the sour grapes you’ve spilled on the floor.

Did Paula Pierce stick his Hack in your Piper?
I wrote that this series is not over.
    Is Rondo a dude?

  10. Azucar - Jun 14, 2010 at 1:26 PM

What is ruining the game is not having the ability to review any play at any time when the refs can’t make the call with authority.
A ball hitting the rim or not is unreviewable? GET IT RIGHT!
Human error is ruining every sport. College football has it right. The NFL is on its way. I don’t care if the game takes 4 hours to complete.
    GET IT RIGHT!

Coaches say stuff like that all the time. It’s nothing to get everyone’s panties in a bunch over. The Celts are gonna beat the lakers in 6 anyway. Go KG.

  12. Anonymous - Jun 14, 2010 at 1:45 PM

I love how everyone thinks Pierce can’t score. I believe he was FInals MVP in 2008. Also, the Celtics play a team offense which is why you generally see each of our starters with 15-20 points a game instead of one person with 30. Kobe is better but the Fakers don’t have much beyond that.
As for the flopping, there is no way that you can say the Celtics are worse than the Lakers. I have never seen anything like it. Fisher and Artest are out of control with it. Probably because they know they are an inferior talent and have no chance of competing legitimately.

  13. Sparky - Jun 14, 2010 at 1:46 PM

The Lakers may play better at home, but the Celtics play better on the road.

  14. Anonymous - Jun 14, 2010 at 1:47 PM

Even the refs know that Fisher is the biggest flopper in the matchup. He doesn’t even get the calls anymore because he’s so well known for his acting skills. Looks like Artest traded his manhood for Fisher’s acting lessons. If I never have to see Fisher’s painted-beard face again, it’ll be too soon.

Jackson’s comments, as the commentators pointed out, were from an earlier regular-season game. The network is shrewdly fanning the flames of rivalry.

This quite possibly is the dumbest post i’ve ever read.

The more I read this crap the more I think these articles must be written by 8th graders. The story isn’t what counts, it’s the byline. Anyone with a computer now can get a media job. Boring. Journal is French for daily. How about journalists just reporting what happens and then shut your pie hole. Nobody care about your opinion. Be a journalist, report on the days events. Then shut your laptop, your mouth, and then go to bed. The Day is over. God what fools. Lets see. This is nothing so let’s make something of it, or better yet throw in my iseless opinion and make a story. GROW UP.

I can’t believe nobody is reporting this on Kobe.Talk about 4th quarters,Let me give you this stat.In every game in the 4th quarter,Kobe is not to be found. In every game in the 4th quarter,he has not even made 2 baskets per quarter. That means hs has made 9 baskets total in 5 games.I called my friend at ESPN and told him this.He is going to e-mail Shelly Smith about this.Everybody keeps talking about him being better than Michael. He’s not even close to Michael.

  19. Bigrele - Jun 14, 2010 at 1:59 PM

Um newsflash dumbass, it was the 2004/2005 Superbowl season & last I checked I do not recall an Eagles Victory Parade shown to the Patriots as they were the favorites to win the game AND Belicheat didn’t need to show his team a victory parade anyway cause he had the video tapes of what plays the Eagles were coming with on their blitz so he already knew his team had the best chance to win ANYWAY; furthermore last time I checked the final score was 24 to 21 Patriots which means they won by a field goal, THREE points! So how in the hell is that beating the feathers off the Eagles? You beat a team by a fied goal & yet you beat the feathers off them, that was by far the DUMBEST load of BS posting I’ve seen in quite a long time; do yourself a favor Punchy, leave posting to those of us who know the actual FACTS instead of making yourself look the STUPID fukkin jackass you really are dumbo! Ha!

I love when you Celtic clowns get all worked up over defending your home court, after tues and thursday, then run your mouth, because I will after the Lakers crush you in game 6 and then take game seven,as expected,or forecasts,or rigged to be,etc.

Phil Jackson was an assistant coach on the Bulls when Doug Collins could not win a Championship. Jackson took over, 6 championships. The Lakers, Shaq and Kobe can’t advance past the Spurs or the Jazz under Phil Donahue (Del Harris). Hmm…what do the Lakers do? Hire Phil Jackson, win 3 Championships. Ironically, they lose to Detroit when they have a loaded roster with Gary Payton and Karl Malone. Phil retires, Rudy T, and some other schmucks could barely get the Lakers into the playoffs let alone, back to the Finals.
Phil comes back, Lakers are back in the finals for the third year in a row. With probably the weakest supporting cast of any team I’ve seen. There are NO LEGIT ALL STARS on the Lakers besides Kobe. The Kobe & Shaq Championships were a walk in the park compared to now, but strangely NO OTHER COACH could accomplish it before Jackson. There are lots of rosters full with talent but no Championships. No one remembers that before Phil, MJ was the greatest player in the league, now he is the Greatest of All Time. Kobe was ONE of the best offensive players in the league, now he’s simply the best player in the league (when he doesn’t cry). Shaq was just a fat guy with a basketball, now he has 4 rings.
Doc Rivers isn’t outcoaching Phil with strategy, he’s managing the Celtics emotions better and inspiring them more. Kobe will never be a great team player because when stuff goes sideways, he looks to cast blame, and loses faith in his teammates. Doc has the opposite going on, with every adversity, the Celtics resolve gets stronger, and they lean on each other more and more. Ultimately making them a stronger team. That’s what Phil used to be able to do, before he started coaching Scowly McBryant.
If I was Phil, I’d hire the best comedy writers to write jokes to tell Kobe Bryant during the game. Cause Kobe needs to lighten up and enjoy himself. Nobody wants to be on the team with a poisonous snake.
That’s right, I’m a black belt LAKER HATER, but to suggest Phil Jackson isn’t one of the best coaches in history is a joke. Ask Mike Brown how easy it is to win a championship with one of the best players in the league on your roster.

Mark Jackson and Van Gundy are a pretty good commentating combination. Mark Jackson gives you the perspective of the game from a player’s point-of-view, and Van Gundy gives you the perspecitve of the game from a coach’s point-of-view. And to even suggest Doug Collins is a good commentator makes me think that you have not sat through many of his broadcasts. Doug Collins is very dull in my opinion but to each his own. Mama, there goes that man!
Also, I think a lot of the comments about Kobe being a ball-hog are not accurate. The Lakers were struggling and Kobe got hot. Yes, he should have tried to work his teammates into the flow, but he was on fire. The issue wasn’t so much of the Lakers’ offense as much as it was their defense. Honestly, it would not have mattered who went off for the Lakers on the offensive end of the court if they are not stopping anyone on the defensive end of the court.
And I think Phil was way out of bounds with his “empowerment” speech to his team during that time out. Somehow, Doc finds a way to keep his team pumped up by feeding them positives about themselves. Also, I think the Celtics have the leaders on the court to get everyone to step up their games and give that extra effort when they need it.
