NBA finals, Lakers Celtics Game 5: Note to Phil Jackson, the Celtics can win games in the fourth quarter, too

Jun 14, 2010, 1:00 AM EDT

Lakers_huddle.jpgThis is what Phil Jackson (wearing a mic) told his team during a fourth-quarter time out, as the Lakers were making a fourth-quarter run.

“(Boston) loses more games in the fourth quarter than any team in the league. They know how to lose games, and they’re showing us that now.”

They also know how to win games. They were winning all the 50/50 balls. Kevin Garnett is going into a pile with three Lakers and coming out of it with a jump ball. (Which he lost to Derek Fisher, another sign of how weird this series has become.)

Paul Pierce was catching bad-decision inbound passes then hitting a streaking Rajon Rondo going to the hoop. Kendrick Perkins was coming down with offensive rebounds when the game was on the line. Rondo was diving into the crown to save balls, then he was out-jumping two taller Lakers for offensive rebound tip-ins.

We have seen flashes of that from the Lakers in their wins, but not in the last two games. Lately all the energy, all the hustle plays have been Boston’s. The Celtics have been the scrappy ones. At this point in the series, the teams know each other so well there are no real Xs and Os adjustments to make, it is all about execution and hustle plays.

Boston made them in the fourth quarter. And if they make them in the fourth quarter Tuesday night they will hang banner 18.

Maybe the referees will let the Celtics play the Lakers in game six…note to refs…”we didn’t tune in to see you…or an endles march of free throws”

“Hey guys. Just sit back and let them lose. Don’t worry about hustling, or passing, or rebounds. Just go stand around and let them hand you the win. You don’t even have to work for it!”
If my pee-wee league coach had said something like that, my eight-year-old self would have known that it was BAD COACHING. Can we stop with the whole “Jackson is God” routine, now?

  3. Azucar - Jun 14, 2010 at 10:28 AM

Unbelievable…..the guy, I mean the 10 time NBA Championship coach is trying to get his men the edge. And, if Boston had not done this, lose so often in the 4th, he would not have said it. This series is not over. LA will get the calls at home as all teams do. Paul Pierce, the actress and primadona of the league, will complain and flop. His game has to be the ugliest of all time. Staples Center will be loud and supportive. The real fans however, will not throw things on the court as Bostonians do. Boston deserves to lose. And tell Nate Robinison I expect to see him in Alien 4 The Shadow when it releases in February of next year.
    Nuf said.

paul pierces actress primadona? he was 12-21 from the field and only had 2 foul shots for 27 points. unless its socialy unacceptable to act as a good basketball player, paul pierce was doing nothing “wrong”

Can you imagine how big a beating the Celtics would have given the Lakers, (Hey, where are there lakes in L.A. anyway? This team’s name is still left over from their days in Minneapolis, where there really are lakes), if the refs had not favored the Lakers all night.
Talk about actors, Fisher really learns a lot of that in LA LA land.

I love how the media is trying to hype this up as Phil Jackson being the bad guy for ripping on the Celtics. It’s an NBA finals basketball game! Phil is just saying whatever he has to say to get his team fired up and reassure them that they can still win. I’m sure Doc Rivers is saying the same type of things about the Lakers, but we didn’t hear it on televison. Just leave the coaches alone. Let them inspire their teams in their own fashion…..and please Refs…..let them play!

Lakers do plenty of flopping. Note when 160 lb Rondo gave 260 lb Artest a little shove he went flying backwards and out of bounds.
Pierce Pierce Pierce. The ugly one has a finals MVP over the Lakers and Kobe. Kobe shoots and shoots, how pretty! But is not that good at getting others involved.
We’ll take the ugliness and another title over the Lakers. We’ll do it with team play, and hustle. And Jack will drink his way home just like he did in 2008.

  9. planktonDisciple - Jun 14, 2010 at 10:49 AM

You don’t motivate a team by telling them its going to be easier than other teams to come back. The Celts did blow alot of leads, but not in the playoffs. This whole season has been about getting to the playoffs with everyone healthy. Doc and C’s did that. Pointing to reg season stats as a “motivator” is lame. How about understanding what you have to do and executing it, how about the heart of a champion? The Lakers should believe it doesn’t matter who they’re playing if they enter the 4th within reach. Better to tell them if they play up to their level, no one can stop them. But Phil’s getting lazy. Which is another good sign for the Green, because Doc is totally on top of it.

Pierce-Primadona?? Are you sure you didn’t mean Kobe as he was the only one I’ve seen do the “whine of the century”! Every time he gets called on something he goes “whining” to the ref afterwards and does his famous “what did I do” jesture. You can tell by his response to getting penalized that he doesn’t expect common rules of the game to apply to him.
    GO BOSTON!!!

Right before the 2002 Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles planned, and published a “Victory Parade” route. Bill Belichick got a copy of it, and read it to the Patriots before the game. The Pats proceeded to whoop the feathers off the Eagles.
Now Phil Jackson, has given the Celtics the same piece of inspired motivation. All Doc has to do is play that clip for the Celts before the 4th quarter of game 6, and there would be no way they would lose!
Perhaps Phil IS a great coach…He can inspire both teams at the same time!

  12. hopalong - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:09 AM

So where was Shannon Brown. Best defender, charges the rim, makes his foul shots and sat on the bench. What gives Phil, no karma for him???

  13. 8foldpath - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Flopping is part of the game. Get over it. Artest is smart enough to know that beating up a 160lb near rookie is not going to win the game.
The Lakers are the better team. Period. When the Celtics come to LA, they will see. I hate to say it, but the Lakers play their best ball when their backs are up against the wall. In game six I expect the Celtics to be taken apart by the Lakers. In game seven, I expect it to be a slugfest. Lakers in seven…

    who cares there all overpaid

  15. Jay - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:19 AM

The last time the finals went 7 games was in 2005. one of the lowest watched finals i believe when it showcased Pistons v. Spurs. I think the refs will favor LA in Game 6. Push it to a winner takes all LA v Boston.

I love this comment you make Stable in NH: “Right before the 2002 Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles planned, and published a “Victory Parade” route. Bill Belichick got a copy of it, and read it to the Patriots before the game. The Pats proceeded to whoop the feathers off the Eagles.”
You forgot to mention Bill Belichick for his cheating in Spygate, but even worse for his cover-up and refusal to show remorse or regret. It doesn’t matter, because the only thing that does matter now is the image of the New England Patriots. The sports community now associates the Patriots with cheating. The three Super Bowl championships are, and forever will be, under suspicion. The thought will never go away.
I am routing for the Celtics…as I can’t stand the Lakers, but the comment on the “Victory Parade” made me LOL, video I am sure helped the Pat’s too. Celtics are above the Patriots and do not need to cheat.

  17. Gren - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:29 AM

Even with them on the verge of number 18
Even with them getting every call, Pierce falls over on the sidline and Bryant is NEAR him and they give a foul.
The Celtics continue to be the Cry Babies of all sports.
    cant they win with dignity!!

  18. Phil - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:39 AM

At the begininig of the season, Artest claimed that if the Lakers failed to win the championship he should be blaimed. Presently he should be blaimed for the failure in his contribution. Why does he hesitate to shoot when he is given the chance to do so and instead he dribbles the ball like a point guard?

  19. Anonymous - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:40 AM

i don’t understand people complaining about flopping. that is smart basketball for those people who does not know basketball. you blame the referee for calling it but not the player… and what the f*** does ‘dignity’ has anything to do with this series?

  20. Fan of Neither Team - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:41 AM

    Kurt-
Ridiculous article. Coaches try to motivate players in a myriad of different ways. Did you ever play sports?
Of course the Celtics can also win games in the 4th….but not the point.

  21. Celtics Banner 18 - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:42 AM

I think it’s funny how Lakers fans keep saying they are the better team…Please elaborate? haha.
Kobe is the best player on the floor (although he is a consistent ball hog), but I dont see how that means they are the best team???
    Pierce > Artest
    KG > Gasol
    Perkins > Bynum
    Rondo > Fisher
    Ray Ray > Odom
    Celtics Bench > Lakers Bench
Only player the Lakers have that is any better then anyone on the Celts is Kobe…but as we have seen, he himself cannot win a game.
So as all you FAKER’s Fans will see…1 player can’t beat a team off unselfish, determined…CHAMPIONS!!!
    Celtics in 6!
    LA = OVER RATED!!!

  22. Drew - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:43 AM

Stable in NH, that was the 2004 Superbowl, not 2002. The Patriots didn’t “whoop the feathers off the Eagles”. It came down to the final possession in a closely contested game.
Flopping is part of the game to a degree, but Derek Fisher’s flops on nearly every possession are atrocious. Why the refs still give that guy calls is beyond me. Flopping when people contest his shots. Flopping anytime someone posts him up. Flopping on off-the-ball contact with Ray Allen (because, you know, Ray Allen surely is bullying him around).

  23. ernesto - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:45 AM

I still say the Lakers in 6!

  24. ernesto - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:48 AM

I still say the Lakers in 6!

  25. Celtics Banner 18 - Jun 14, 2010 at 11:48 AM

This statement is as stupid as anything I have ever read.
Kobe is just as bad as anyone in the league with crying about calls. When he got the ball ripped out of his hands in the 4th he starts throwing his hands up and whining…
News Flash KOBE…its the finals…you arent getting special treatment cuz all your FAKERS Fans think you’re god reincarnated.
Pierce pooped on Artest all night and also kept the flow of the offense intact…
That GLEN is how a REAL PLAYER does it…
Keep making excuses for your over rated team lol.
