NBA Playoffs, Celtics Magic Game 5: Does one good game deserve another?

May 27, 2010, 9:50 AM EST

Here’s what we learned after the game last night: Stan Van Gundy hates Rasheed Wallace in a good way, the Magic get how hard Game 6 will be, and Big Baby is always a little bit loopy.

Isn’t a lot of what we see with the Magic just the natural volatility of a team that relies on 3 point shooting? Let’s say your team averages 100 PPG and takes 30 3 point shots a game. If you average 40% on those shots (12 makes) you end up with 36 points from those shots. But 40% average means sometimes you just naturally only shoot 30% (9 makes = 27 pts.) and sometimes you’ll shoot 50% (15 makes = 45 pts.) Because you rely on long-distance shooting your PPG will vary from 91 to 109 irrespective of what the other team does. It bugs me that there is so much commentary on things that are more easly explained by mere random variation.
