Mike Brown fired as Cavaliers coach

Multiple sources are reporting that the Cavaliers coach was fired Sunday night.

This was expected after the Cavaliers were ousted from the second round of the playoffs by the Celtics. But while everyone knew it was going to happen, it did not happen fast, Brown got to twist in the wind for a week.

Nine days ago Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert denied a report that he had already made up his mind about Brown, saying would make a decision in seven to 10 days. But he had a bigger gun to his head — a Sunday night midnight deadline of $4.5 million. According to his contract if Brown was not released within 10 days of the Cavaliers season ending, he would have to be paid his full $4.5 million salary for next year. That deadline was midnight Sunday.

Now Brown is gone. It leaves a couple big questions.

First, what is next for Mike Brown? While the Cavaliers were not happy with him, at least some of the five teams still looking for coaches might have interest in a guy who coached a team to the best record in the East two seasons in a row. He is the kind of defensive-focused coach general managers prefer, he likely will get interviews.

Second, what is next for the Cavaliers? Or, more realistically, who can they hire as coach that will help keep LeBron James in town? Certainly, as any team would do with its biggest star, he would be consulted about anyone hired. But will it have any influence on his decision is hard to say. And right now everything Cleveland does is about getting him to stay. No first-time head coaches need apply here.

mike brown is a good regular season coach.didnot make adjustment in playoff for 2nd year in a row.hickson was the key too victory. taking shaq out w/4 fouls bad ideal,he won 4 championship, keep the team 2gether and hire van gundy ex-knick coach.if west is dating lebron mother cut him, because as a man there somethings you cannot do.

    Nice choice of picture.

At last… Hire Vinny Del Negro together w/the current Cavs line-up. And please get rid of Big Z if they have the chance, such a waste of Money. why did they sign that anyway? out of pity?
Is it true that Delonte West is banging LBJs mom? could you imagine that? It’s like Lebron w/Long hair? Wouldn’t that make you vomit? Damned Delonte! Cavs should’ve let him stay in the nuthouse for the rest of the season! LOL!

I guess the next underachieving coach to get fired has got to be the guy in Orlando…….let’s just see what spin is put on him returning for another season.

Do you always believe everything you hear? I know I certainly don’t. Consider the source of the rumor, & go from there.

  7. BigDaddyDee - May 24, 2010 at 5:08 AM

Mike Brown is a good coach, that’s obvious if he coaches his team to 60+ wins not just twice, but 2 seasons in a row. Unfortunately, his team ran into better teams during the last 2 playoff runs. Sorry but my cousin Vinny Del Negro is not the answer. Hire Kurt Rambis away from the Timberwolves or hire Byron Scott and the Cavs will be better suited for the playoffs next year…assuming they can keep LBJ.

I’ll be a baker’s niece before I believe that West is putting the hot sausage into LeBron’s mother’s orifices – it’s all a load of dolphin sperm, the kind of Ford rust that cheap rumor sites thrive on. Don’t have a word of it.
As for Mike Brown, he certainly did get what he deserves. I have always found the Hawks’ ex-head coach, one Mike Woodson, a far more attractive prospect, and now that he is on the market I think that the Cavs would do well to snap him up. His facial hair looks like it would irritate a woman’s soft and delicate skin should he rub his cheeks against the inside of her thighs.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is a racist.

  12. Anonymous - May 24, 2010 at 7:52 AM

OMG Racist my A@@ A black coach gets fired and you pull the racist flag. Maybe you need glasses but 90% of the Cavs team is african american.

  13. Delonte Whoseyourdaddy - May 24, 2010 at 8:16 AM

So Delonte is banging Lebron’s Mother, no wonder Lebron was distracted in the Boston Series. The image of that is cracking me up. Delonte is in Gloria’s Room with his motorcycle and shotguns, getting stinky with her, then counting corn flakes in his cereal bowl the next morning. That is sick. Goodbye to Mike Brown the worst coah I have seen for making adjustments to intense Playoff Games, no wonder we kept losing.

Let’s see… save $4.5 million. Check. Open a spot for LeBron’s new best buddy Calipari. Check. Can offer more max contract money than LeBron can get anywhere else. Check. Dump the idiot who’s banging LeBron’s mom. Oops. One more to go. He’s still not staying and who really cares, unless of course you live in Cleveland? Kobe’s proving every day that he, not LeBron, is the best player in the NBA. Most Valuable? No. Because without Kobe, the Lakers still go deep into the playoffs with Gasol, etc. The Cavs without LeBron? Hello lottery… Keep the mantle pieces, LeBron. Kobe will just keep the jewelry. And I’m a Bulls fan. I don’t care much for LA.

  15. C-Town Sports Guru - May 24, 2010 at 8:38 AM

Bottom line is Mike Brown wasn’t willing to put the right line-ups on the court. Bad playoff decisions led to quick exits. Was he that good of a coach? Put LeBron on any team with any coach and he can make them seem like a good team. The Cavs were soft in the playoffs. The swagger of the regular season doesn’t do a lick of good when you’re fighting for your life in the playoffs.

  16. Cali - May 24, 2010 at 9:26 AM

Never thought of MB as a “great” coach able to make required adjustments during playoffs. The reg season is OK, but the only trophy is called “playoffs”. I am not a Cav fan, but I felt sorry for this team collapsing in the playoff, year after year. Owner should have fired MB 2 years ago.
Is James the league MVP? nahhh. Kobe is now a better player, a better passer . Like Magic used to do, he makes the team plays better as long as he’s not a ball hog.
    Celtics in 6.

100% of slaves were black, idiot! The majority of oppressed people in West Africa under Apartheid were black, idiot! Brown was not fired for being black- he was fired because they couldn’t blame their star (they don’t have the stones for that) for not winning when it counted, and the coach is always the first scapegoat. However, racism does still exist, moron, even if not in this case. Stop using the term “race card” and learn how to think beyond “if someone mentions race in any way, shape, or form, then whatever argument they are posing is invalidated”.

  18. rdplatwa - May 24, 2010 at 9:51 AM

Dan Gilbert is a racist? Must be why he hired Mike Brown in the first place!

  19. Bill-Sonora - May 24, 2010 at 9:57 AM

The last 2 coaches for the CAVS were black, genius.

  20. al po - May 24, 2010 at 9:57 AM

To keep LeBron in Cleveland, offer him the job of player-coach.

  21. UNCLEZERO - May 24, 2010 at 10:05 AM

The original poster that started the “RACE CARD” debate did not have
a valid argument,he simply called the owner of the Cavs a “Racist” .
Hopefully the firing of MB is a sign that LBJ maybe considering staying with his Home Team .

  22. Kewl Dewd - May 24, 2010 at 10:34 AM

Dan Gilbert is not a racist – he made a bad decision. Coach Brown won your franchise over 60 games 2 (two) seasons in a row and made your franchise player (Bron) the league MVP twice. U made the NBA Finals on his watch too – Dan Gilbert should @ least give the guy one more season but hey its HIS TEAM. Dan Gilbert is not a racist – STOP IT.

No more Mr. Potato Head? Oh well.

  25. Anonymous - May 24, 2010 at 10:50 AM
