Apparently the author of this article doesn't know what he's talking about. Dallas is in the mix because of Erick Dampier's unique contract. Dallas can send Damp to any team in a S&T and as soon as they waive him they instantly wipe anywhere from $13 - $16 million off their books depending on who they send back. Damps contract is an instant expiring, not a dime of which is guaranteed. There is no other instant expiring contract anywhere near $13 million (contracts structured like that usually go to very low payed players).
Damps contract makes Dallas the only team in the league that could actually engage in a S&T that would allow the other team to take back no salary in exchange (or very little).
Sports illustrated writes that "Dallas should be take very seriously," because they understand the "DUST Chip" concept.
Dallas would trade Damp, a couple first rounders, Roddy Beaubois, and $ considerations. If the Cavs know they're going to lose Lebron, do you really think they're going to care about PR? No, they're going to try and get everything they can out of his departure. If, Lebron wants to go to Dallas, he'll go to Dallas.

If Lebron were to sign and trade he's go to an organization that can actually win championships. Like the Spurs or the Lakers, not some crappy franchise that gets upset by the 8th seed and gets knocked out in the first round.
