Kobe's wife wears "Do I look illegal" shirt, only one talking immigration

May 18, 2010, 9:03 AM EDT

vanessa_Bryant.jpgPhil Jackson isn’t going to talk about it. Kobe Bryant won’t go near it. The Lakers aren’t going to talk about it or wear their Los Lakers jerseys. While there was a small protest outside, inside Staples Center the Arizona Immigration law discussion was dead.

Except for Kobe Bryant’s wife.

Vanessa Bryant is part Hispanic and she wore a shirt that said, “Do I look illegal?” to the game.

The reference was clear.

She — and often the couple’s daughters — are regulars at Lakers games. They tend to stay out of the limelight, as much as that is possible for a high-profile family. But she gets noticed, and used that to make a statement at Game 1 against Arizona.

Do I beleieve people should obey the law, hell yes, but let’s do it the right way and enforce it properly, but I’m not going for no “BS”, taking about cutting grass and that other racial “BS” no place in this debate for that.
Yeah you can’t say we will enforce this law but not that one, just leave the racial “BS” alone and do it properly, if not your going to have problems and all the “Dark Skin” bro and sis gonna rain on your ass.
asian, black, latino,”ALL” of us, ya get my drift.

Can’t we all just get along?
There is an illegal immigration problem but it’s not just Mexicans/Latinos/Hispanics as was pointed out. Pointing the finger at one group of people will only create more problems (Racial profiling), which I don’t believe is the intent of the law but unfortunately is a possible result of the law.
By the way, Kobe didn’t rape that girl.

“Yes, you do. Carry the proper documentation and you’ll have nothing to worry about Mrs. Bryant.”
And this is why the law is a problem – people will start labeling everyone who looks Latino as being illegal… it’s already happening. This new law will only reinforce that thought process and make it more common place.
So, now any brown person not carrying their birth certificate or green card with them (what is proper documentation for citizens anyway?) could be subject to arrest because they left their license at home?
Maybe we should just skip the niceties and start opening internment camps again, like we did when we were fighting Japan in WWII. Or maybe Germany still has some Jewish arm bands left over from the Nazi era we could borrow… It would be nice if we could actually learn from our mistakes in history. Scapegoating is the easy way out and racial profiling will lead us to more division.
The idea that the majority of Mexicans entering this country illegally are drug dealers, gangsters, and/or hostile criminals is ridiculous. Sure, some of them probably are, and we should certainly work hard to secure our borders to keep those types out. But let’s stop short of trying to make them all out to be gangsters and drug dealers – those with common sense know that’s not the case. But then again, I suppose issues like this rarely attract people with common sense.

If that’s the case why are 90% of welfare recipients hispanic? Just visit the local social aervices office for proof.

  12. jasbo - May 27, 2010 at 12:38 PM

Yes there are. They’re from Canada.

  13. ntwallace - May 27, 2010 at 1:23 PM

No one will be stopped for what they look like. Just another lie about the law. The Supreme Court has ruled that federal law officers do not need a reason to stop someone and ask for ID. The arizona law is tougher because it does require a lawful stop. No one is demanding we boycott Washington, DC. If the majority of people arrested and deported are Mexicans, it’s because the majority of illegal immigants are Mexicans. This isn’t racial profiling. It’s math.

  14. Patrick M - May 27, 2010 at 1:32 PM

To answer Vanessa’s question, no, you don’t look illegal. You do however, look plain stupid.

The whole argument about whites being illegal in America because native Americans were here first is ridiculous. Of course it’s terrible what the arriving Europeans did to the native people, however, every country’s boundary was determined by warfare at one point in time; should we tell those living in Mexico to go back to Spain because the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican people were there first?
Also, most illegals are Mexican or enter through Mexico, that’s called a fact, not racial profiling. And the reason we care more about illegal Mexicans is because they come in huge numbers and breed like rabbits. Last time I checked there weren’t millions of Canadians crossing illegally into the United States every year. I think we can deal with a few thousand illegal Europeans, but the millions of Mexicans is ridiculous and not even comparable to any other migrant group.

This is all a waste of time, can’t stop the rush they are already here! we should be focusing on Crazy mother F’rs Like Timmothy McGay and crazy bastards like him that want to Blow up buildings and kill people for some sick BS reason! This country has bigger problems then “Illegals”, That’s what this country is founded on. most people at one point in time in America were not welcome! The Irish were abused, Italians{Wop means With Out Papers}, The Japanese, The Germans and the list goes on and on… We have no Choice but to Embrace are Friends to the south as we do are friends to the North! We should help Mexico and Make North America That much more powerfull. The real enemies are half way around the World!

You dont get it, NOT ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HISPANIC OR LATINOS are MEXICANS, SO stop calling assuming, dumb ass!!!

  19. Happy Bunny - May 28, 2010 at 12:38 PM

On TV, it read, “Do I look Legal?”
BTW, wonder how late her maid had to stay up the night before glittering that on her shirt?

  20. bc123 - May 29, 2010 at 1:57 AM

But there are tens of millions of Latino illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America. Yes other people are illegal too but please don’t be stupid enough or more likely intentionally deceive to put the spotlight on anything but illegal aliens from the South.

  21. mikesporty - May 29, 2010 at 5:22 AM

Illegals are illegals… in Arizona or anywhere!

  22. Anonymous - May 29, 2010 at 5:04 PM

Once again Kurt Helin astounds us with another worthless piece of “basketball news” to bait an audience and rack up a bunch of reviews. This must be the place for sports writer rejects to write for $1.99/hr. Speaking of which…
It’s not a matter of whether Kobie’s wife “looks” like she’s illegal, its whether she is “acting” like an illegal. Since she isn’t hanging out in some halfway house in the Arizona desert with a couple other dozen Mexican’s carrying all their belongings with them in garbage bags, then maybe not. She’s not standing outside of Home Depot or some nuresry with a group of twenty Mexican’s looking and smelling like they just crossed the desert, then I guess not.
It’s no problem to be a Mexican. It’s no problem to be an immigrant. It is a problem to be an illegal immigrant. That’s the law, right? Oops, I mean the hate.

  23. Anonymous - May 29, 2010 at 5:18 PM

Of course it is not illegal to sit in a half way house in the desert with all your belongings on your back, or to stand in line at a Home Depot. But if you do, you might want to have your ID with you.
C’mon guys, how is this any different than enforcing any other law. If you go into a ar and look young, then you better have your ID. If you are speeding and look like you are 14, you better have a liscence. If you are out shooting guns during deer season, you better have your tags.
Fact is there are millions of people in our country ILLEGALLY. In a border state like AZ, guess where most of them come from?
Mexicans – quit crying about not being able to get away with breaking the law. Law abiding residents are paying taxes up the a$$ as it is. We don’t need to pay more taxes to support illegal’s so they can send cash south of the border.
Personally I love Kurt for writing his trashy “basketball” posts. We get to rant and swear and call people names. Keep it up Kurt!!

    Kudos to you my friend!!!
In my opinion, you are one of the most leveled-headed bloggers on
the site right now. Historically speaking, you are absolutely correct, the American Indian lived on the open prairie with the
buffalo, long before the white man began his expansion westward.
With regard to all the other issues, let God make the final judgement!!!! You go Vanessa, your hubby is one h— of a basketball player. I think the Lakers will take it all. I like the Suns personally. Come on people get off the hate wagon on the
Latins, my girlfriend is a Latina and she is beautiful and very smart!!! Let’s grow up , alright??

  25. just being me - May 30, 2010 at 2:53 PM

It’s funny to me that people get on here and just talk sh**. Why would somebody talk in that sense. Why, because they don’t have to answer to anyone’s face for their stupid comments. Real gansta’s don’t talk sh** over the internet. As far as the shirt she wore I see nothing wrong with it but, people have to realize that if every state followed AZ we would’nt have this problem. Don’t get me wrong I am the first person to get a hispanic to work on something for me because they are dependable and fast workers. With that being said we have a real problem with illegal immigrants in this country. Now people call it racial profiling when cops have been doing this same sh** to black people from day one.(Get a taste of the bullsh** we go thru.)I am an advocate to people getting citizenship to stay. Why could you possibly get mad at a state for enforcing a law.
If you want to stay green your green card or pack your sh** and hit the road.
********By the way Celtics will take it all the way******
and if you must know I am an african american.
