John Calipari to Cleveland to keep LeBron in town? Why not?

May 12, 2010, 9:43 AM EDT

calipari.jpgAny place that dots can be connected around LeBron James, they will be. Even a few places they can’t people will try.

So when popular Kentucky coach John Calipari had courtside seats for the Cavaliers/Celtics Game 5, lines started being drawn. We turn it over to Yahoo Sports college hoops blog The Dagger:

One week after the first report linking him to Chicago and four days after an NBA official suggested Cleveland should hire him to increase their chances of resigning LeBron, there was Calipari seated courtside at the Cavs-Celtics playoff game in Cleveland. Seated next to him on one side was LeBron’s agent, Leon Rose. Seated a few seats away on the other was Cavs owner Dan Gilbert.

The official reason for Calipari’s presence was to accompany the family who won Cavs playoff tickets in Kentucky’s Haiti telethon a few months ago, but the sight of him alongside Rose certainly raised eyebrows. Of course, the major reason an NBA team would have interest in Calipari is in hopes that his strong relationship with LeBron and mutual confidante World Wide Wes would help a franchise lure professional basketball’s most prized free agent this summer.

After watching the Cavaliers play last night, think he still wants the job?

Calipari’s dribble-motion offense is better suited to LeBron’s skills than what the Cavaliers are running now. Which based on last night is to have him float around on the weakside without the ball and hoist a lot of jumpers.

One happy coincidence is CAA represents both Calipari and James, and both have ties to the already mentioned William Wesley, the matchmaker of all basketball matchmakers.

Would Calipari want the job, or is this more negotiating leverage with Kentucky? It’s all speculation, but you can connect the dots on this one.

Cal ain’t going anywhere. I’ll worry about that after UK wins their next NCAA Championship. :-)
Even when he does go…UK will be OK. At least as good as who ever your school is that you root for…LOL
You just don’t get it do ya? UK is an elite program. I know it sucks for you because whoever you pull for can not and never will be what UK is in basketball.
I feel for ya…maybe your university has a good LaCrosse team or something…LOL

Kelly J. Where did I say Cal called Jones. That’s right I didn’t. The kid call Calipari to let him know he had made a decision. I got my information from an article that quoted the kid’s mother as to what happen. So you can call the kid’s mother a lie if you want to. But I’m going by what she said. I would trust her word be for I trusted Cal’s.

Kelly, you are the typical UK fan that everyone hates. You throw around phrases like “whoever you pull for is not us”. You have won 3 titles in 50 years. Congrats. 2 titles in the last 50 years. Awesome. Yes, UK is one of the top 5 programs of all time, but get over yourself. No one cares about UK tradition other than UK fans. Turn the page.

I am a UK fan who really enjoyed last season’s team. They were a special group of talented kids that seemed to really bond as a team. It’s doubtful that Calipari will ever replicate a team that has that much athleticism embellished by such great chemistry. That being said, I don’t trust Calipari for a moment. He is charismatic and likable, but he will forever be tinged with the reputation for pushing limits and operating in the shadows. He’s had a great year in terms of revitalizing this program, but if he chose to leave it wouldn’t be a big loss for UK.

“your” that Ukant 2.02 GPA shines thru even for the rank and file!

  6. KellyJ - May 13, 2010 at 12:41 PM

Evidently you care about UK’s tradition and fans. Why else would you be here posting? You are a typical hater. Your team probably sucks and the only thing you know to do is to look up articles on the internet about other teams and then trash those teams that are better then yours. LOL
Wow…I am a UK fan. That’s how I got here. I seen a link about UK and being a fan I went to it. And then here you are. You root for another team yet you came here with the sole intent of bashing UK and Calipari. What’s more sad? LOL

You do realize that Memphis has a lot better recruiting class for next year than Kentucky, right? Number 1 recruiting class in the nation if I recall correctly.
Calipari is a scum ball. There’s a reason he has such a good history of recruiting, and it is unclear why that is. But, one thing that is known is that he can’t win the big games.

  8. GoCats - May 15, 2010 at 4:06 AM

Does anybody not realize Calipari cheated in two organizations and promptly switched afterwards? He didn’t go to UK because it was an Elite job, he went to UK because he F’CKED UP in Memphis and his reputation was tarnished.. exactly the way it was at UMass. I wonder how long it takes him to cheat at UK.

  9. Cali-VACATE Cant Coach - May 15, 2010 at 3:11 PM

I hope Cali-VACATE stays in Lessington.
    1. He can’t coach a LICK. He blew a 9 point lead in two minutes to HAND a title to Kansas. And he couldn’t sniff the Final Four this year with likely 5 players drafted in the NBA first round, even though West Virginia’s starting point guard broke his foot 2 days before the game!! Hello?!?! You have John Wall and Eric Bledsoe dumb@$$!! You ever heard of PRESSING? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
    2. Cali-VACATE fits U-ah-K like a glove. Sleazeball coach with the most corrupt program in NCAA history. Numerous NCAA probations. An entire season canceled in their hey dey in the 50’s. As long as Cali-VACATE is at U-ah-K, the chances they return to the NCAA doghouse improve.
    But …. alas ….
He’ll probably run off to the NBA to lose in the playoffs with his buddy LeBron “No Heart” James.
And the comedy in Lessington will shift.

  10. John - May 24, 2010 at 10:53 AM

Hey Barry, Cal a fraud, thug, cheater? Please provide some links! People that don’t like Cal root for teams he beats! Sour Grapes anyone?

  11. John - May 24, 2010 at 11:04 AM

    Hey Cali-V,
I think you have UK mixed up with UCLA!
Cal will be with the Cats next season and for many more to come. He will hang a banner or two in the process.
You must be a Louisville fan. Too funny. Now get back to class!

  12. Cali-VACATE Cant Coach - May 27, 2010 at 9:13 PM

    Hey John —
UCLA didn’t lose to West Virginia minus a starting point guard, with John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Patty Pat Pat and Eric Bledsoe.
    Cali-VACATE did.
UCLA didn’t blow a 9 point lead to LOSE a national title.
    Cali-VACATE did.
Then he blew town, and that whole season was VACATED by the NCAA.
Better be careful. If Cali-VACATE does get lucky enough to win a title in Lessington, history shows that it won’t last, and the title will be vacated.
Which is FITTING for Kentucky Basketball, the most corrupt basketball program in the history of the NCAA.
HA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
    Take off loser!!!
