Suns will wear "Los Suns" Jerseys as part of Arizona immigration bill protest

May 4, 2010, 5:18 PM EDT

This took some real cajones.

The controversial immigration bill (SB 1070) just signed into law in Arizona — which allows police making a “legal contact” to demand citizenship papers and makes it illegal not to have them on you — is popular with the majority of voters in the state. Those people are the Suns fan base, the people who fill the US Airways Center, and will again Wednesday night.

And they will see a home team wearing their “Los Suns” jerseys, part of a protest of the bill that included bold statements from several players and the team owner in opposition to it. A protest that was voted on and approved in the Suns locker room and by management will take place on Cinco do Mayo.

The politically active Steve Nash spoke out against the law, as Bright Side of the Sun reported.

“I think the law is very misguided. I think it is unfortunately to the detriment to our society and our civil liberties and I think it is very important for us to stand up for things we believe in,” Nash said of the bill. “I think the law obviously can target opportunities for racial profiling. Things we don’t want to see and don’t need to see in 2010.”

Team owner Robert Sarver added his voice, via the Arizona Republic:

“The frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law,” Sarver said in a statement released by the Suns on Tuesday morning. “However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”

“I looked around our plane and looked at our players and the diversity in our organization,” Sarver said. “I thought we need to go on record that we honor our diversity in our team, in the NBA and we need to show support for that. As for the political part of that, that’s my statement.”

Immigration is a complex issue, one where economic and trade policies of many nations impact local economies and force people to migrate to find economic safety and a better way of life. It has been that way since the first cities were formed. And almost since that time, laws have been put up to stop this immigration. Like so many things in our nation, this is a complex problem with politicians trying to implement simplistic answers and often failing to do even that.

But whatever you think of the new law, you have to admit it takes some real balls for the Suns to make this statement in defiance of their fan base. Or cajones, if you prefer. Although, shouldn’t the jerseys really read, “Los Sols?”

Okay Juan, great, you pick my food, well guess what that is your choice. SO let me ask you, how long have you been living in the USA tax free? So you want to choose a dirty job for minimum wage, rather then become a LEGAL citizen and make a higher wage and a better job? Give me a break. You said it, ‘We dont have all the benefits that a US citizen has” Well become a Legal citizen then you will. Another thing, why don’t you just stay in your own country and deal with your own problems there? Oh that’s right, everyone wants a free ride from the good ol’ USA.

Let’s see if I got this straight?
Send us people willing to do menial work for less than minimum wage off the tax rolls so the Fat Cats don’t have to pay Social Security, Medicare, retirement, and health benefits, and if they get sick or want to educate their children or themselves, tell ‘em to get lost? And, just when I got to the part about Lincoln freeing the slaves. Oh yeah he got killed for that! Ameerika; love it or leave it, but make sure you give us some sweat before you leave.

Shane, the new Arizona law addresses those things you mentioned regarding employers. However, you must be aware that no new restrictions have been added via this new law.
All it really does is mandate that our state and local law enforcement enforce the federal laws under the conditions already outlined in federal law. AND, profiling is strictly forbidden.
However, most of those objecting to the new law have not even read it. What can you expect from such ignorance.

A drivers’ license is NOT adequate to confirm citizenship. We in AZ will all have to carry our birth certificates. And for those of you who think because you’re white, you won’t be asked to provide an ID, you’re WRONG. Forty miles north of the border on I-19, in Tubac, AZ, there’s a “border” checkpoint (a friggin’ waste of our money, plus of course the illegal border crossers know the checkpoint is there and go around it – duh). Every car must stop (always backed-up) and occupants must show that we are citizens. Just for fun, the big, bad BP can decide to search your car and trunk – and you. It’s infuriating to be asked over and over whether you’re a citizen. All that money could be better spent hiring more border agents (jobs!) and putting them ON THE BORDER. Harassing people (no matter whether citizens or not, no matter what color) is NOT the answer. Many of us in AZ are embarrassed. We’re also proud of Los Suns for having the heart (okay, and balls) to stand up for what’s right.

STEVE NASH, you need to just shut up and play ball. You have no idea what the f-uck your talking about. You are the one that is misguided. And so are you mister Suns president. You call the law misguides buts its just a carbon copy of the Federal Law.
Steve this has nothing to do with civil right, please shut up. Th
Steve the only things that is a detriment to our society is the amouth of illegals in this country. Remember the keyword here is ILLEGAL, NOT Legal. We are talking about the amount of illegals that are hard core criminals. And we need to do something.
Steve you are a very rick guy so you are not affected and have no idea how our health care on the border is being affected negatively by illegals. You are so rich your not affected and you have buy all the health care you need to SHUT UP.
Steve you have never been affected by illegal activity including rape, murder, gangs etc.. Steve I and my family have. So Steve shut the F up.
STEVE I was a huge fan when you were back in Dallas and I was still a fan even though you went to Phoenix.
Steve you are no longer a fan favorite of mine.
    Steve shut up

Sounds like you need a history lesson. The lands you refer to were Spanish grants given by Spain. They were originally lands of the native indians who had migrated to this area years before Spain was even on the map.
Then came the “whites” as you call them, and took the lands from the “mexicans” who had ownership via the Spanish land grants.
In other words, the Spanish kicked the native indian’s asses, and then the European whites kicked the Mexican asses. That’s the way the world has gone for millennium.
Sorry about your loss, but you’ll just have to get use to it.

One less hispanic racist as a fan is a win for the Suns!

  17. Riaz - May 6, 2010 at 2:15 AM

There is a flaw in this calculations. There is no insurance for illegal aliens. No insurance company will insure them, no apartment owners will rent to them. They end up paying a lot more for all of those things that we get cheaply. Have you ever paid cash for a doctor’s visit? It costs more to visit a clinic or have a surgery when you don’t have insurance. That is why USA is clamouring to have some kind of general healthcare.

  18. Michael - May 6, 2010 at 2:20 AM

    I absolutely agree, Shane.
These law breaking employers hiring illegal immigrants are a major key to this problem. Crack down hard on those employers breaking the law by knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, will cause many of these douchebags to be mreo careful, and perhaps more honest.
If the jobs for illegal immigrants dry up, many will stop coming and some will even leave.
One more time- if the Federal government did the job they are charged with by the Consitution and also enforced the present laws we already have, did so with resolve and consistently- there would be no need for states like Arizona to take action themselves. And the vast majority of folks in that state approve of the legislation. Often, out of frustration and years of being ignored, anger brews and people demand action…. even if it’s not perfect legislation, they want something done. The Federal government has not done their job. Other states will follow if the government does not wake up.

  19. Anonymous - May 6, 2010 at 2:25 AM

wow. how can you make assumptions like that? they’re doing the jobs you refuse to do. show some support. immigrants are people too.

  20. JUAN VALDEZ - May 6, 2010 at 2:29 AM

IF “THE JOBS FOR THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS DRY UP”YOU PROBABLY NOT GOING TO TAKE ANY OF THIS JOBS.

  21. Michael - May 6, 2010 at 2:34 AM

Take your people butt to Mexico illegally, get caught and see how long they let your “people too” hiney hang around. In fact, enter any other country illegally and get caught.
Also, in this country, there is a defined process for becoming a citizen that is much easier than so many countries. Try becoming a Mexican citizen, a French citizen or Spanish citizen. Not only do we allow more legal immigrants into this country than any other country every single year- we also grant more citizenship to these immigrants than any country comes close to allowing. Period.

Help me to understand this law……Okay I am not Hispanic but my wife is. Her father and mother were from Mexico but she was born in San Antonio, is a US citizen and always has been. She has lived all over this country, Wisconsin, Maine, Rhode Island, Virginia, NC, MS, Tn…She has paid her taxes SS etc. for 30 years..Now we live in West Texas…So….if we happen to drive across Arizona we can be pulled over and my wife can be asked for her citizenship “Papers” because she no doubt looks Latino…If she doesn’t have them she can be arrested because that is illegal?
Actually I haven’t read the law but this is the way some comments make it sound. If this is true arrest me too because I will be perpetrating assault of a peace officer…..if not true then please someone clear this up for me.

  23. JUAN VALDEZ - May 6, 2010 at 2:47 AM
