What most forget aboubt Amare was he went to 5 different High Schools and right into D'Antoni's system knowing little about playing defense in a rotating scheme. he has been chastised about his poor defense over the years, but never was taught anything about playing team defense in the run and gun of D'Antoni.
He is 27 but 25 and a half years old on the floor in playing age as he missed a year and a half due to injury. Part of the early part of this season he spent gettting confidence that he could move fast and play up to speed again. He had to drop 20 lbs. and get in playing shape after the season started as he could do nothing more that walk slowly for 6 months to protect the eye and let it heal. Last March his eye was hanging out of it's socket having a detached retina. The recovery of that possible career ending type of injury is longer than most think.
Amare as talented as he is offensively (did you see his left hand last night?)is learning just earning how he fits into a team defensive scheme. One can only expect him to get better defensively with Bill Cartright and Dan Majerle tutoring him. He would be a huge loss to PHX if the Suns can't resign him. But that might be the case.
