Dwight Howard is known as one of the nicest superstars in the NBA. At times, he’s even been accused of being too nice. So why is Howard one technical foul away from an automatic one-game suspension?
Orlando Pinstriped Post decided to try to answer that very question today. Commenter “magicfaninTN” put together an obsessive analysis
of the situation surrounding all 17 of Howard’s technical fouls. (Two were later rescinded, which is why he’s technically still one tech away from the automatic suspension that comes with technical #16.) He then took the data and tried to come up with some conclusions of his own. Five of the seventeen technicals actually came after a foul called on Howard, which would suggest that he was telling the referee something along the lines of “I am of the opinion that these chaps have made illegal contact with me before, and I believe you were mistaken in waiting until now to blow the whistle.”
Another five of the technicals occurred in games where Dwight had been sent to the bench early with foul trouble, and another four occurred when Dwight found himself in late foul trouble. Only one of the 17 technicals was given because Dwight was “preening.”
There’s plenty more interesting stuff in the full post — I encourage you to head over to Orlando Pinstriped Post and get the full report of the circumstances that caused the NBA’s best center to lose his cool seventeen times this season.
