Nets owner, fan to have bag-lunch summit

Mar 29, 2010, 7:48 PM EDT

First, Nets owner Brett Yormark made himself look bad when he yelled at a fan who wore a paper bag over his head while attending a Nets home game. After that, Yormark realized that when you’re the owner of a team as bad as the Nets, having a sense of humor might not be the worst thing in the world. First, Yormark turned the paper bag incident into a promotion. According to the Associated Press, Yormark is looking to get a little more publicity out of the incident. Here’s the release:

“The chief executive of the New Jersey Nets will have lunch with a fan who recently wore a brown bag over his head to protest the team’s woeful season.
Nets CEO Brett Yormark and Chris Lisi of Middletown will sit down for lunch Tuesday at the Nets’ headquarters.
Lunch, of course, will be brown-bag style.
Yormark had a brief heated exchange with Lisi a week ago after seeing him with the brown bag on his head during a game.
Yormark defended his actions the next day, saying he was standing up for his team, which is 9-64 and needs one win in its last nine games to avoid matching the NBA record for fewest wins.
The meeting will be streamed live at http://www.njnets.com. Yormark and Lisi will be joined by Nets radio broadcasters Chris Carrino and Tim Capstraw.”
The whole thing feels a little hokey to me, but I suppose when you’re trying to avoid a share of the worst record in NBA history, good publicity isn’t all that easy to come by.
