Durant doesn't think he'll win scoring title

Mar 5, 2010, 7:36 PM EDT

At 21, Kevin Durant is already one of the best scorers in the NBA. He can drive the ball to the basket, hit the outside shot with ease, and has great shot selection and a wonderful bag of tricks on the offensive end.

This season, Durant trails LeBron James by a hair for the title of the league’s leading scorer, and had a stretch of 29 straight games scoring 25 or more points. What’s even more impressive is Durant’s efficiency. Durant’s true shooting is over 60% this season, which many great scorers have never done in their entire careers. And did I mention he’s 21?
Apparently, the only player who doesn’t know how great of a scorer Kevin Durant is is Kevin Durant. In an interview with Fanhouse’s Chris Tomasson, Durant said the following about his chances in the race for the scoring title:
“I’m sure [LeBron James will] win it, because he’s a better scorer. He scores more easily than I do. I really don’t care too much about it, (James), Carmelo (Anthony), Kobe (Bryant), those guys, Dwyane (Wade), are way better scorers than I am.”
Durant is either really modest or playing some games. I understand a young guy giving props to the league’s more established superstars, but way better? Durant is both scoring more and doing it more efficiently than Kobe, Wade, and Carmelo, and in some areas it’s not close.
Durant may look like an innocent kid who woke up surprised as anyone that he can rain in threes at 6-9, but he can’t fool us. He’s an assassin, and the secret’s out. And seeing how badly Durant wanted that 25 points at the end of some of his games during the streak, I wouldn’t be surprised if all of this is just a prelude to Durant capturing the scoring title with a late-season explosion. Props to the guy for being such a nice guy as he torches NBA defenses, though.
