I agree with you regarding Jordan’s elevating the game in the NBA. And you also go on mentioning people in other countries watching him play.
But by that time the NBA is getting better media mileage globally thanks to technology. And now, people can get into the latest thing on the NBA through their mobile phones and not just their pc’s. You don’t even need the telly to update yourself of real time happenings which you can even do while you are at work!
Back in the 80′s and even earlier, global exposure was very much limited if not outright nil in other countries. And even for people in the U.S., they even have to hope that their fave teams get to play in a national-televised game.

Bluff? do you realize the percentage of NBA players who could even boast of having at least a championship? Moreso of being a vital cog in a championship run? LBJ can have the season MVP for all we care but Kobe has got something much more important than multiple season-MVP’s — the Larry O’Brien trophy and the Finals MVP.
Kobe has nothing to weep about.
LBJ has a lot to weep about. Remember his unsportsmanlike behavior just right after the buzzer of the last game between the Magic in the EFC last year?
I thought so.
But I do agree with you: Magic is the best if not one of the top three Lakers ever and MJ the best NBA player ever.

The point being THIS GENERATION. The younger generation doesn’t look past high school and who played then. LeBron’s hero’s were Jordan and Iverson. After that…they pretty much feel everything is up for grabs.It was about who inspired him.
As far as the greatest ever…..LeBron will have more points and already has more assists than J had at the end of his 7th year……..so maybe he thinks he’s entitled……..or maybe he’s going to 33 next year…and 34 the year after that….than 44 after that…..and change again to a former star’s number every year after that………..

Jorge – I said Lebron is a walking triple double threat – not Kobe. The point being, Lebron can fill a stat sheet better than anyone else – but stats don’t make the legend. Championships do. That’s what Kobe Bryant is doing. And don’t anyone make the poor claim that Kobe has a talented team and he SHOULD be winning trophies. Kobe’s playing with 2 other all stars in Gasol and Artest as too is Lebron in Shaq and Jamison, plus the Cavs have beaten the Lakers twice this season already. If Kobe wins it again this year… it underscores my point. While Lebron is busy winning MVPs and endorsements, Kobe’s winning Finals MVPs and rings.. and the legend continues… Kobe will be the first player ever to have 2 numbers retired for one team!

Being known as the greatest is more then basketball stats. bill russell dominated the league during his time. now a days everyone has a higher talent average and most players are a threat on any given day. Kobe is Kobe and Lebron is Lebron. they both are great in their own ways. without the other 4 players they wouldnt win JACK. the fact is that we sshould be lucky to have such great players to adore instead of 90s – Jordan. 80s – Dr J 70s etc… Bottom Line, love your favorite player and respect others choices because they are all as good candidates as any other player.

Jordan elevated the game to a new level. Not to show disrespect to the awesomeness of Bill Russel, Dr. J, Wilt, Magic, Cousy, Bird or any of the other greats who have played this game in the past; but nobody elevated the game and the NBA to the level that Jordan did. Kids in Africa stopped to watch Air soar in for a dunk, interest in Asia and the Eastern Bloc gained strength on the prowess of MJ’s cunning drives and showstopping performances in the Olympics and the finals that followed. He was the King of the World, unless you forget, defining what we now know as “showtime” and igniting fervor and passion in portions of the world who barely knew the game before him. He broke the decades long coastal domination by the Lakers and the Celtics and brought championships to Middle America. His performances were heart-stopping, inspiring and mesmerizing, and most of all, Lebron ACTUALLY saw him play, unlike Russell, so it’s no wonder he has more respect for the man.
He was an all-star, a superstar, and an ambassador of the game. And if anyone should ever have their number retired in the NBA it’s him — the game today is what it is because of Michael Jordan. Just ask Kobe or Lebron.

@ Ossie, Although Kobe is the better player right now, He has had 14 triple / doubles in his 12 year career. While James has had 18 triple / doubles in a 5 year career. Advantage Lebron! I only point this out because you stated Kobe was a potential triple / double threat every night. It would appear to me that James would be more of a triple / double threat every night than Kobe. There are many other arguments that can be made while comparing these two extraordinary atheletes. The triple / double would not be one of those arguments for Kobe. I’m just saying.

Lebron is BAR NONE the best player in the NBA, which also means the world! Kobe is a great scorer, in fact among the greatest. Unfortunately that is all that kobe sees, the basket. Lebron has a full understanding of ALL aspects of the game of Basketball and if he wanted to he could step out on the floor on almost ANY night and ring up a triple double. Kobe can’t impose a triple double on his opponents on any given night like Lebron can. Face the music Kobe lovers of the world: Bryant is in decline, his nagging injuries this season have made this painfully obvious. While Lebron is on the rise! Every player in the NBA fears the footsteps of Lebron in transition, because the sound of those footsteps is the sound of their shot about to get slapped from behind! AMAZING!!

Saying that Jordan is not the greatest ever is ridiculous. During Jordan’s era he had to compete against more bonafide hall of fame players night in and night out than in any other era. When they named the 50 greatest players of all time, 85% of them were from Jordan’s era. Today’s era is where things are lacking. There just is not the same skill level from team to team of high caliber players like there were in Jordan’s time. So please don’t try to take anything from Jordan. True Bill Russell had 9 rings (great accomplishment)but he was not exactly going up against a young Shaq, Olajuwan or Ewing. So lets please compare apples to apples. As far as the Kobe vs LeBron debate, I think it is too soon to crown a champ. Kobe’s team’s have been far superior to any of LeBron’s teams. The Lakers bench could probably start on a different squad. Therefore Kobe should be winning rings. I think LeBron retiring the number is out of respect for MJ but maybe it’s not. Who cares? I am not buying either one of there jerseys. Holla!
