NBA referees everywhere conspire against Lakers

Feb 25, 2010, 7:24 PM EDT

It’s just blatant, obvious fact that no member of the Los Angeles Lakers has never committed a foul or ever committed a violation that would result in a turnover. So naturally, we were all as outraged as Andrew Bynum was to find out that not only were the Lakers were called for 20 — twenty! — personal fouls during last night’s game against the Mavericks, but Bynum himself was called twice for traveling violations. Here was Bynum’s reaction to CBS in Los Angeles concerning the biggest atrocity in the history of officiating (via Mark Francescutti of the Dallas Morning News):

“It’s hard to play 8 on 5…When I asked one of the officials, how did you call a
travel? He said, “I didn’t see a travel.” “The guy who called it looked
me in my eyes and said “I didn’t see a travel.”

Then in reference to a foul that he thought should have been called
on Dirk Nowitzki, Bynum says the referee told him, “I didn’t think it
was going to mess your shot up.”

Lets not even pretend for a second that those travels could have been the product of anything less than flawless footwork from Bynum, who is not only wholly dominant but also bearing flawless work ethic. And those 20 fouls? It’s not even possible that they came as a result of some uncharacteristically lazy defense. Not even in the very realm of possibility.

Look, being called for fouls and turnovers…that’s just not Los Angeles Lakers basketball; their power is unmatchable, their grace is undeniable, and their focus and execution on both ends of the court is completely unwavering. If you’ve been to the STAPLES center, you’d know that.

And don’t even give me that “the refs aren’t perfect, they’ll miss calls on both sides” nonsense. This is an institutional conspiracy. David Stern loves LeBron James and obviously wants the Lakers to lose every game. That’s why the Mavs only committed 16 turnovers while the Lakers committed 17. And that’s why the Lakers were called for 20 fouls while the Mavs were called for 20 fouls. Every referee in the NBA was given the explicit order to make tons of calls against the Lakers, and last night’s game was only the latest piece of evidence to prove it.

Keep the hate to yourself. You suck, you make Florio look like Hemingway.

  2. Kanner - Feb 25, 2010 at 7:44 PM

Dude i actually liked reading this site daily, after reading the sarcastic Laker bash I’m removing this site from my bookmarks. How would you type that crap up, proof read it, go online to post it and not realize that it’s a pointless Lakerhater article?
    Good Bye.

  3. Rafael - Feb 25, 2010 at 7:49 PM

A player criticized the officials? After a loss? And it may be groundless complaining? Stop the presses!

  4. Seriously? - Feb 25, 2010 at 7:57 PM

Why in the world did you become a writer?

  5. jonathan - Feb 25, 2010 at 8:11 PM

Rob, I know you’re both a Mavs guy and you dislike the Lakers, but really? You’re an excellent blogger, but this is not your finest work. As Rafael pointed out, you could write this column after every game from every losing team.

  6. Jared - Feb 25, 2010 at 8:20 PM

Haha… listen to all these Laker apologists. It’s funny cause both teams were called for the same amount of fouls and Bynum is acting like they got the shaft. You fools are clueless.
    Mahoney > Florio

  7. lee - Feb 25, 2010 at 8:36 PM

hahahaha!! smack it baby! screw the lakers.
all to often, probasketballtalk features mundane, league-approved filler while featuring arguably the best team of nba writers on the internet. reading posts can be like watching a hummingbird in a plastic bag. i hope nbc let’s these writers do their thing.

  8. Aaron - Feb 25, 2010 at 8:41 PM

Like having all the good bloggers on this site, but so far it’s been like watching Charlie’s Angels in nun’s habits. Everyone seems to save the good stuff for their own sites. Moore does sarcasm and Laker fan-baiting more creatively than this, but instead, he’s doing weak pimping of college coaches (Calipari), while Kurt’s stuff has been snooze central compared to FB&G. Only Krolik seems to be on the ball so far. Pick it up, guys.

  9. easymoney - Feb 25, 2010 at 8:52 PM

The Lakers are starting to look like any other team in the NBA. Quit whinning Laker fans. Its about time Kobe and the rest of them started getting called for their errors.

  10. Jared - Feb 25, 2010 at 9:52 PM

“but so far it’s been like watching Charlie’s Angels in nun’s habits.”
Who the hell watches Charlie’s Angels anymore? You must be old.

Rob; you are an idiot! Please be sure to let nbc know I have now taken probasketballtalk off of my home page and will not be on the site again. too bad Kurt didn’t stay at FB&G.

LMAO @ the guy above me (that’s what she said).

  15. Philthy - Feb 25, 2010 at 11:00 PM

easymoney you must be retarded. every other team in the NBA? wow do you watch the games or just hate LA because they smack your favorite team around. Haters hate it’s what they do, but try not to look dumb while doing it.

  16. RadioRadio - Feb 25, 2010 at 11:40 PM

Please be sure to let nbc know I have now taken probasketballtalk off of my home page and will not be on the site again.
I’m sure they’ll come running to have you back.

  17. waywithwords - Feb 25, 2010 at 11:48 PM

Methinks the writer doth protest too much. “Biggest atrocity in the history of officiating.” Wow! Talk about hyperbole. Apparently, you totally lose perspective and become unable to write intelligently when it involves your favorite team, even indirectly. Mindless emotional outburst. Not even amusing as satire. Face it, Rob, you lost it, went bonkers. Hissy fit time.
Hey, we’re all passionate about our favorite teams, but when you put on the hat of a journalist or sports writer or reporter or blogger or whatever you consider yourself, at least try to remain objective, dispassionate and loyal to the ideal of discovering some truth in your writing. Take my advice. If it has anything to do with your beloved Mavs, run it past a (non-Mavs-fan) friend who can act as your editor. Yikes!

  18. Simonoid - Feb 25, 2010 at 11:49 PM

Rob, granted – the sarcasm was there but it was dry and probably won’t cater to any but the most dedicated of them Laker haters.
Don’t you think it’s a little too much to have this as a post? Other than to attract a little bit of attention and comments, what else do you have to gain?
I mean come on, it’s an immature kid making about a comment about how he believe he’s mistreated. It happens 10,000 times every season. What you’re doing is just as bad as those who blog about every morning practice Kobe attends.

  19. nomuskles - Feb 26, 2010 at 12:08 AM

wait. what? someone on the internet said something you disagree with?

  20. J.D. Hastings - Feb 26, 2010 at 12:25 AM

Great, the Lakers just announced that Bynum will be out the next 6 weeks with “Sore Feelings.” Thanks a lot, bro.

  21. 50yrLakerFan - Feb 26, 2010 at 7:12 AM

I get the “humor” in the article, but it wasn’t really that funny. It does bring up a somewhat serious point however. It seems to me that the officials have identified Bynum as “fouler”, and they call a lot of ticky-tack fouls on him. Fouls that other players get away with, especially other big men. Maybe I’m wrong and Bynum just has bad habits but it seems, at least to me, that they call an awful lot of garbage fouls on the kid.

  22. Jared - Feb 26, 2010 at 10:00 AM

Wait….so Bynum had TWO personal fouls in the entire game and the refs are targeting him as a fouler? My god. These Laker fans just don’t give up.

  23. sam - Feb 26, 2010 at 10:33 AM

You don’t offer any logical discussion except merely writing some ***** here. Give me back my 5 min.
You cry about a player crying??? how ironic.
How much time did you take to come up with this crap?
next time i will skip reading your articles……good bye

  24. Jimbo - Feb 26, 2010 at 11:17 AM

This is hilarious! These are the first people who lambaste anyone else for saying the officials didnt make the calls against them.
Laker fan would just like it how it was in the past, always one team against the Lakers and the refs. Sorry guys, they might actually be calling you fair now.
What? You ACTUALLY have to experience calls against you that didnt happen? Welcome back to the REAL league, fantasy champs.

  25. u dum - Feb 26, 2010 at 4:11 PM

That was a joke? Guys panties are all in a knot, so are Bynums. This blog post wreaks of irrational hate. Maybe the writer should smoke a bowl.
