J.R. Smith decides to taunt Kobe

Feb 24, 2010, 12:48 PM EDT

nba_smith.jpgIt takes a certain confidence for an opposing player to snipe at the indisputable Western Conference favorite Los Angeles Lakers, and something between arrogance and complete stupidity for an opposing player to take a shot at Kobe Bryant. If that’s not a cue for the Nuggets’ J.R. Smith, then I don’t know what is. Here’s what Smith had to say about Kobe on Twitter (via the OC Register):

“Dont get me wrong kobe is great but not when he play me”

Not only is Kobe one of the best players in the league, but he’s competitive beyond belief and just about the last guy on the planet that you’d want to give bulletin board material to. Considering the Nuggets and Lakers could very well have a date in the Western Conference Finals, I wouldn’t say it’s the smartest thing in the world to give Bryant extra motivation…especially considering Smith’s fleeting interest in defense.

And for the record, Kobe is averaging 26 points (46.2% FG, 45.5% 3FG), six rebounds, and an assist against Denver. That’s technically a notch below his season averages of 28.0 points (46.5% FG, 35.5% 3FG), 5.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game, though Bryant is averaging three less shot attempts per game against the Nuggets.

The two teams — plus Smith and Bryant — meet in a nationally televised game Sunday.

oh and by the way…..GOT RINGS?

  2. JB - Feb 24, 2010 at 3:19 PM

Ever heard of a comma, Mr. Grammatically Correct?

  3. stopjocknmyswag - Feb 24, 2010 at 3:39 PM

    Don’t you mean correct grammer?

  4. JBP - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:04 PM

Talking about someone who’s on HGH for his brains only. I knew that stuff does some serious brain disorder. Why in the hell would he want to wake up a sleeping dog? Well JR, welcome to the world of kibbles and bits, Koby will be taking a piece out of his ass sooner or later.

  5. Anonymous - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:11 PM

    Kobe sucks!

  6. Phil - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:16 PM

JR Smith gets to talk trash and then hide behind Kenyon Martin, who guards Kobe most of the time anyway. Pu$$y.

  7. ANONYMOUS - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:23 PM

For real, who is JR Smith? Carmelo’s shadow. JR cut it out, you will never be Kobe.

  8. The Computer Geek - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:28 PM

From a Laker fan to j.r.smith….Thank you!

  9. pma - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:45 PM

I’m an LA fan first, but I have to admit those Nuggets are a tough team. JR Smith is a punk, no doubt. But his team is going to make Kobe work for it on Sunday. Can’t wait . . .

  10. Jason - Feb 24, 2010 at 4:56 PM

Unfortunately, this piece doesn’t let the facts get in the way of a good story. J.R. actually said Kobe was The S*** , and caught so much crap about it from his Twitter followers that he decided to puff out his chest a little bit. It wasn’t J.R. mouthing off, it was just him defending himself.
Two other things. First, Cheese, you sir are an idiot. “So maybe JR showed log back onto twitter and apologize to his team for making Kobe go off on them”? Um, in case you missed it, Kobe hit the game winner against the Grizzlies, not the Nuggets. Second, its spelled grammar, folks. There is no “e” anywhere in the word.

this is so said of a time to talk trash. I know he wants attention. He is now talking to the world the stuff he been saying in the locker room. Know he feels like he can say it now because he has beaten the lakers twice. He is like a younger brother hiding behind his bigger brother how sad. I was trying to like smith because my son like the nuggets. I can not do it. I wish or I really hope carmelo leaves that dang team soon. I hate they have held him back from shooting the ball most of his years, and then the nba does not promote him like they did lebron and he did go to college. shouldnt we promote school for black males. I guess not, what was i thinking.

Hope you enjoy a lifetime of hockey, because most of those in the NBA are at the absolute bottom of the I.Q. chain (with sincere apologizes to the few exceptions, such as Nash, Nowitzki, etc.).

  20. adam - Feb 24, 2010 at 7:53 PM

    tame… this not a story

  21. luffy - Feb 24, 2010 at 7:53 PM

To Larry Jo! What’s with the rape thing? you seriously believe that? Dude?! Are you stupid or something? Kobe could get whomever he wants, that’s just plain old one night stand, it’s just that the girl is a money hungry bitch or maybe… you’re just another rape victim which sued but didn’t win? you perv dumbass!
Anyways, Kobe has class while J.R is a thug…

  22. JR Jake - Feb 24, 2010 at 8:28 PM

All the way back to childhood very few times has a challenge from one player not met straight up with a full blown onslaught against the offender. History is steeped with people who cannot just play their game, include their teammates, and go about business.
If you win the game you won the personal match, no more or less. When one player does not want to feed his teammates and make them inclusive as part of the quest, they will be forgotten just as easily by their teammates when it is crunch time. Kobe and all great players know that.
Kobe will say nothing, give him that little smile and nod at the next game and go about his business. At the end he will give a pat on the back, “Good game, see ya in April” and smile once again. That is what great players do, they let their game do the talking. Good luck JR, you don’t want to awaken a sleeping Tiger.

hey mr. jr smith you must have forgotten that KOBE ‘D BLACK MAMBA’ BRYANT is a 4 time champ in the nba…and what do you got? nothing!!!! KOBE IS A CHAMPION AND YOU’RE NOT!!! that’s it no comparison needed…

  24. ocgunslinger - Feb 24, 2010 at 9:15 PM

JR….Talk is cheap. Walk the walk first.
First and foremost, Bryant has become a polished team leader and also a brilliant clutch performer. You will never be either.

Remember the quickly dismissed Kobe stopper of Portland from the past? Nuff said.
