Kings waive Larry Hughes

Feb 23, 2010, 7:08 PM EDT

In a surprise to nobody, Larry Hughes has been waived by the Sacramento Kings.

Hughes was salary filler to make the three team Tracy McGrady/Kevin Martin trade work, but the Kings were always going to cut him loose. He never even came to the West Coast to rehab his fractured finger. Today Sacramento made it official.

It is likely some team, one near the top of the standings, will pick up Hughes for some backcourt depth heading into the playoffs. The Celtics are rumored to have shown some interest.

Oh I hope the Celtics or Lakers pick up Hughes. He makes Eric Snow look like a legitimate jump shooter. Seriously, I don’t understand why any contender would bring in the enigmatic Hughes. When the Cavs had him play the one out of necessity he got angry because his shots went down. That’s the type of guy you want to pick up for the stretch run? That’s without taking into consideration the horrible shot selection, passive defense, and inevitable injury. Sometimes these teams in contention need to realize that many guys that are waived aren’t always waived because of the $$.
