Jayson Williams gets five years in jail

Feb 23, 2010, 1:30 PM EDT

UPDATE 1:30 pm: Before the sentence came down, Williams addressed the court and the members of the Christofi family at the sentencing.

“I am not a bad man, but I acted badly on Feb. 14,” Williams said. “I will work endlessly to improve myself, to help others and to again make positive contributions in our society. That’s who I am, and that’s who I want my daughters to be proud of.”

12:58 pm: It took eight years from the time of the crime for the sentence to come down, but former NBA player Jayson Williams has been sentenced to five years in jail for the shooting that killed his driver Costas Christofi.

He will be eligible for parole in 18 months.

Back in 2004 a jury deadlocked on charges of reckless manslaughter, but rather than go through another trial Williams pled guilty to aggravated assault. Back in 2004 he was acquitted of a charge of aggravated manslaughter, but was convicted on several counts of trying to cover up the crime.

Williams will serve two five year terms, for the assault and cover up, but they will run concurrently.

Williams was a popular NBA player with the chance at a broadcasting career ahead of him, all of which came crashing down on a night in 2002 when he was showing off his home and a shotgun to friends on a charity team. The weapon went off and killed Christofi.

Thats what is wrong with this Country he got five years for killing a man. He should have gotten the death penalty. Quit playing with these rich fools, anybody without money goes to jail for at least 20yrs. This & the Dante Stalworth case shows the misguidness of our mind set about sports & celebrities. They are no better than the guy next door, they can shoot a ball or hit it, but when you kill you are still a murderer.
