Arenas may not be done with the Wizards

Feb 18, 2010, 7:45 PM EDT

During a press conference today, Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld made some statements that suggest Arenas may play for the Wizards after his year-long suspension is over. Grunfeld said that if “[Arenas] wants to play, this is the place he’s going to play,” and that “he’s under contract and he’s going to be with us.”

Grunfeld also said that the team has kept in touch with Arenas, and referred to the guard as one of the “top players in the league.”
Mike Prada from Bullets Forever said that the atmosphere did get tense at one point:
“There was only one awkward moment.  One reporter asked Grunfeld how he’d describe his own relationship with Arenas.  Grunfeld deadpinned for a second, as if he wasn’t expecting the question, and said in a low voice, “It’s fine.”  Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but the comments he made about Arenas besides that indicate that a return is actually possible.”

Two of the Wizards’ “big three” have been moved in deadline deals. Many have assumed that the leader of the trio was done with the Wizards as well. However, it looks like Arenas may yet be around to lead the Wizards as they finally begin to rebuild.
