Stunning revelation: Magic Johnson had sex

Feb 14, 2010, 2:47 PM EDT

The best NBA novelist on the planet — Roland Lazenby — has a new book coming out in a few weeks on the life of Jerry West. Of course, the first parts of the book to get leaked publicly are the most salacious.

That brings us to Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (as picked up by Sports by Brooks), talking about the Magic Johnson-era Lakers

“The team’s locker room, and its sauna, had been a place where the star and other players had entertained women, even right after games. Johnson would retire to the sauna after a game, have sex, then put on a robe and return to the locker room for his postgame media interviews.”

So it was Showtime off the court too? Big shock. This is Magic, a guy who admitted to having more than 300 sexual partners a year for a stretch and who contracted HIV because of it. Everyone has moved on from this. Aside being titillating, this tells us nothing new.

I have and am reading an advanced copy of Lazenby’s “Jerry West: The Life and Legend of a Basketball Icon.” Interviews and a review will come. But this book is the opposite of titillation — it is the story of a hardscrabble boy who has a career that many would dream of (Gold medal, NBA title, 50 greatest players of all time) but that was driven by his failures. West lost an NCAA title game and the seemingly countless times to the Celtics in the NBA Finals. Those haunt West to this day, the successes were fleeting to him.

It’s a great read, but if you are picking it up as a Kitty Kelly tell-all, you are going to be very disappointed.

It is inevitable that a rich famous athlete will have multiple sex partners throughout their careers. It is a part of the stigma of being a superstar. That’s the way their lives go. I am not shock anymore to hear if such so and so had sex with several women. In the Roman days…the gladiators were considered “sex objects” by women who like deadly combat sports. Majority of women like men who excel in sports which also might inject curiosity in women about their stamina in bed. Athletes breed sexually-active women. It’s a fact !!

dont drag bob into this…..he was not married when he had those flings.

  4. wonderful - Feb 22, 2010 at 5:05 PM

Magic did not cheat on his wife. He only found out about the HIV, right after he had gotten married. He had to take a phyical to get health insurance, and that’s when he found out. He contracted the HIV virus before he was married.

Magic and Cookie were not married when he was seeing all those women but they had an on again off again relationship and tried twice to tie the knot. Each time Magic backed out, no doubt because he knew he wasn’t ready to commmit. He found out about the HIV AFTER he and Cookie were married.

I disagree that Johnson got a pass. His image took a major hit. But many years have passed, and he’s done a lot to rectify his image in recent years. Perhaps you’re too young to remember.

    Everybody,
In 10, 20, 30 years, none of this will matter. It will all be HISTORY! So, relax, live your life the best way you know how; don’t past judgement, for one day, you will be judged as well.
So, today, everyone can have a cold one on me and bill the government. Tell the gov. agent, “I’m with the Banks” The gov. agent will reply kindly, “Do you want more?” Ahhhhh~!

Because he was accessible, personable and downright friendly to the media. The Anti-Tiger.

Ah you young’n’s. Do any of you actually remember the day Magic Johnson announced he had HIV? Do you remember where you were? As a life long Lakers fan long before Magic arrived and then a huge Magic fan to this day, I remember that day. I was driving home with my best friend on the 605 freeway passing Katella when we were listening to the news conference.
I think one of the main differences between Magic and Tiger is that the media loved Magic. Magic was a personable guy, always a huge smile on his face. Tiger on the other hand, “I didn’t have my A game today.” – Mr. Roboto – gruff, serious. When Magic announced he had HIV for the most part at least in Lakerland and NBA fandom everyone felt a ton of sympathy for Magic Johnson. Sure many thought it was a Death Sentence – but it was Magic – and if anyone could fight HIV – with money, new drugs, it was Magic. And here Magic is all these years later.
Some of you are saying “Ohhh it’s the 24/7 internet media scrutiny – that’s the difference now.” – NO no no. There are lots of people in the sports media that have had an axe to grind with Tiger for all these years – and haven’t had an opportunity. At most they could complain about him cussing and losing his temper on the golf course. Outside the rope, outside of Golf – there was little they could get a handle on.
This was 100% jealousy. This had NOTHING to do with race. This had to do with someone who had been placed so high up on a pedestal that for all these years nothing could knock him down. When it started to wobble everyone grabbed hold and shook for all their worth and down came cradle, Tiger and all.
For those of you who are saying that it was because Tiger was married to a white woman that’s why he’s being attacked so strongly, let’s take a quick look through our magic mirror shall we?
If Magic had been married to a white woman would have the media covered it differently?
If Nicole Brown Simpson had been, let’s say, brown, would anyone have cared about a certain high speed chase?
If Tiger had married Tila Tequila instead of a pasty euro would that have made a difference in the coverage?
The truth is lots of people in the media and sports fans in general are bitter about athletes and their success and especially bitter about the greatest athletes and their success especially when they are held up to the highest levels of admiration. It doesn’t matter if the athlete is white, brown, purple and gold, fans and media alike are like sharks waiting for the first scent of blood before they go into a feeding frenzy.
It’s nothing new. All down through history those at the bottom are waiting with sharpened daggers for the great to fall. When they fall the bloodletting begins.

This was a very well written response but I will say the only thing that stuck in my head was you calling Elin a “pasty euro”…ROFLMAO!!!!! So inappropriate but so damn funny!

I have to agree with you 100%!

  14. nice comment - Mar 2, 2010 at 5:52 PM

yeah, the only small difference is Tiger getting crucified and Magic getting a free pass is that Magic has HIV!

  15. LG - Mar 5, 2010 at 12:57 PM

“Magic” looked the world in the eyes and swallowed his medicine. Tiger won’t and is trying to hypnotize himself into believing he can just make everything go away.
Too bad though, because it’s true that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. No one gets a free pass, sorry.LG

Yah! why would anyone care about black women being raped or whatever, they like it, and they love there babies daddy more than anything evn if she isnt sure which daddy belongs to which baby, and black women dont cheat ,only with there other babies daddy, you CF98 are the reason that discrimination is so easy for some people, because you just as racists towards white as whites are against black.I laugh at blacks who say this country is mostly racist against blacks when there is a black president.

  17. Mr. Imtiredofracist - Mar 8, 2010 at 4:50 PM

Terry of course no white man has ever fathered a child out of wedlock. No white man has ever raped a women, beat his wife or did any other ill to society. You are the worst kind of person and more than likely a GED grad. Thanks for your klannish ways.

  18. jb119 - Mar 8, 2010 at 5:34 PM

Jerry West was hardly week. One of the great pure shooters of all time. Great with assists and a great defender. I’m a celtic fan
and Havlicek, Russell, K.C. Jones would all agree they did not look forward to facing Jerry West. I would much prefer to watch Jerry and Oscar Robertson than watch Kobe. Kobe wouldn’t know a pass if it hit him in the head. Ask Gasol. Basketball is a team sport. Magic and Tiger live in a different time. These people are great athletes just have weaknesses like the rest of us.

If the internet is the main reason Woods has been/is being excoriated by the media types, how do you explain the way the following contemporary affairs have been/are being handled:
Bill Clinton and his extensive bimbo list?
John Edwards and his baby mamma?
Jessie James and his sleazy hoes over Bullock?
Brad Pitt out right disrespecting Jennifer Anniston for Jolie?
To name a few. Heck, not only was Clinton not attacked this way, his accusers were treated worse by the media than Tiger. I can’t wait to here the excuses for why these contemporary philanderers have not been/are not being pilloried with such vile contempt, venom and disgust the way they are slinging the hate at Woods.

Its not just blacks having children out of wedlock a**hole, the problem exist in blacks, whites, and hispanics. Just because there is more of a struggle for blacks does not mean it is only them so yes that comment does make you racist for the simple fact you thought about people might say its racist and you only addressed the problem in the black community. And I can gaurantee it is not 70% show me the site you got your info from since you say statistic facts.

Race has nothing to do with anything ever at all period. People do what makes them happy and what they think they can get away with. Race is such a tired tired tired excuse. As a person from a family of three races I can assure the color of ones skin is merely their pigment.
