Stunning revelation: Magic Johnson had sex

Feb 14, 2010, 2:47 PM EDT

The best NBA novelist on the planet — Roland Lazenby — has a new book coming out in a few weeks on the life of Jerry West. Of course, the first parts of the book to get leaked publicly are the most salacious.

That brings us to Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (as picked up by Sports by Brooks), talking about the Magic Johnson-era Lakers

“The team’s locker room, and its sauna, had been a place where the star and other players had entertained women, even right after games. Johnson would retire to the sauna after a game, have sex, then put on a robe and return to the locker room for his postgame media interviews.”

So it was Showtime off the court too? Big shock. This is Magic, a guy who admitted to having more than 300 sexual partners a year for a stretch and who contracted HIV because of it. Everyone has moved on from this. Aside being titillating, this tells us nothing new.

I have and am reading an advanced copy of Lazenby’s “Jerry West: The Life and Legend of a Basketball Icon.” Interviews and a review will come. But this book is the opposite of titillation — it is the story of a hardscrabble boy who has a career that many would dream of (Gold medal, NBA title, 50 greatest players of all time) but that was driven by his failures. West lost an NCAA title game and the seemingly countless times to the Celtics in the NBA Finals. Those haunt West to this day, the successes were fleeting to him.

It’s a great read, but if you are picking it up as a Kitty Kelly tell-all, you are going to be very disappointed.

Magic has been forgiven because he came told the truth, asked his wife to forgive him, and she did. The jury is still out on Tiger. He hasn’t talked to the public about his mistakes, but if he does (and doesn’t lie) he will no doubt be forgiven also.

Where the hell were you when he made his nationally televised apology? I would have told people to go to hell. It’s his life- you’re not a partner in it nor are all the other racists who still put him down. His baby-sitter wife now has $100 million- nice payoff for having 2 kids- she was not a model- just a money chasing blonde.

Thanks jtt-esq, for bringing truth into this discussion, which, by the way, is a pretty sophisticated thread, relatively speaking. All of us who knew the NBA and cared about Magic knew that he was single when he did all of his philandering. The attempt to compare Magic with Tiger is misguided and somewhat race-based in and of itself. The only thing that Tiger and Magic have in common is that they are black athletes. Magic was definitely caught up in an out-of-control lifestyle and he was totally wrong to have indiscriminate sex. But he wasn’t cheating on a wife because he wasn’t married. He was just living “the life”. Tiger was profiting off a squeaky clean image, and was married. He was living a lie. And, to make matters worse, he was married to a white woman and cheating on her with white women. If pointing this race-related fact out is “playing the race card”, so be it. Not too long ago in this country a black man could get lynched for even looking at a white women and some of those same sentiments are still held, ironically, by the same (mostly) white men who post on this thread and accuse people of playing the race card simply because they are pointing out socialogical truths. The other point about the Internet and the 24 hour news cycle is also valid. Magic’s problems happened in a different media era. Tiger is just SOL. I know he got into Stanford, but how smart is the guy, really?

  3. scb - Feb 15, 2010 at 12:52 PM

Because Tiger seemed to be a good guy and seemed to have morals. No one ever expected morals from an NBA player.

  4. Dondee1965 - Feb 15, 2010 at 1:21 PM

There are four reasons that Magic got a pass and Tiger didn’t:
    1. Magic contracted the AIDS virus and yes many figured that was punishment enough and that he wouldn’t live that long
    2. Magic was not married when he slept with those 300 women a year for years
    3. Magic was then and is now genuinely friendly. He is a people person. So when the news of him having a dreaded disease came forth, people including the media actually felt for him.
    4. Magic met the challenge head on. There were hints in the news that he had contracted the virus but before it could get out of hand Magic manned up and accepted responsibility without asking any pity from any of us.

I bet 95% of you that are commenting on Magic and Tiger are having affairs and/or cheating on your significant other. Check the mirror guys!

  6. dang1 - Feb 15, 2010 at 1:37 PM

Magic and Tiger are human. They had opportunities most men could only dream of, they both failed in the eyes of our judgmental society, but I believe very few men could stand up under the temptation these guys had with out falling. If we were rightious ourselves we would be more concerned about rebuilding their mariages and wanting the best for them both.

  7. frontrowfred - Feb 15, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Birdie17, FYI… Magic’s tragressions took place before he was married. Get your fact straight!

  8. Bob - Feb 15, 2010 at 2:29 PM

Frontrowfred. It’s you who should get the facts straight. Magic was, by his own admission, a womanizer up to and after he announced he was HIV positive.

then go find something to do that is constructive
like helping out an orphanage by giving $$

Terry – black people having broken families probably has something to do with them being systematically enslaved, dehumanized and later oppressed (in the modern era). What do you think? If you don’t think the above has anything to do with it, then it must be a function of nature (genes), right? If external forces aren’t to blame for their ills, then it must be their genetic make up that makes them so dysfuntional. So which one is it Terry (cause it HAS to be one of the two), are they simply genetically dysfuntional or are we seeing the results of systematic oppresstion. I’ll leave it to you to choose.

  11. Dondee1965 - Feb 15, 2010 at 2:47 PM

I agree let’s not just talk about it…let’s be about it

  12. Terry - Feb 15, 2010 at 3:09 PM

‘External forces’ – are you saying that because of the oppression that black people suffered in the past that they can’t help themselves now? This is a bit insulting. I don’t buy your argument that white people are to blame for blacks not having strong families – at some point personal responsibility must kick in.
‘Genetic make-up’ – There are many stories about white athletes, rock stars, etc. acting the same way. What’s wrong is wrong. Does that make me a prude? I guess so.
The question is not for me to answer – I’m merely stating facts. If there is a question it is up to the individual in question to answer. EACH person is responsible for his or her behavior.

For the record, Magic announced his HIV status (November 7, 1991) two months after getting married (September 14, 1991), so part of the lack of condemnation is clearly that he was single for most of his exploits.
The fact that Tiger had such a squeaky clean image clearly did not help him due to the utter shock, which is why it hit so hard. Also, as big a star as Magic was, I would argue that Tiger was an even bigger star, even if only slightly. Tiger was clearly the biggest star athlete on the planet at the time of the revelations, and I am not sure that Magic was alone at the top like Woods was.

  15. Trishala - Feb 15, 2010 at 8:12 PM

Magic is rich enough to have received some special health treatments. How many of those 300 plus, plus women died because of his exploits. Well we will never know. Magic was not married during most of this. However, his wife did not just pop right up in the last few months before marriage. Yes–there was pity because he had aids. The internet was not yet in place. Magic was disgusting when he said on TV–I am hardly homosexual–as there was that rumor. Essentially thinking that the more babes you banged the more macho you are. Common sense should have dictated that when the numbers get that high it is almost a certainty one woudl have gotten aids. Sad because he certainly had to have infected others–many that have certainly died. I had liked him till that point. No longer.

  16. john - Feb 15, 2010 at 8:35 PM

MAGIC DID NOT. Cookie his now wife was his girlfriend and knew but they were not married.
What a guy Jerry West is. How many women did he have???
    WEST is weak.

  17. vinnide64 - Feb 15, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Yall remember the movie “300” well this is the sequel called “319” where the past comes like a ghost and takes over the body of another athlete who could not deny the deamons from HOE the ghost that infests weak athletes that have no power to fight it off. But guess what this ghost has the power of kim cardashian, beyonce, tyra banks, meagan fox, sandra bullock, and the pure nastiness of lil’kim and that would be hard for any man to pass up or deny so why do we always throw the men to the firing squad and the women walk away with a magic prize to keep for beauty shop braggin or a tiger prize to get a SWEEEEET book deal or tv tell all i.e. monica lewinsky. when women are involved they can make a million but when a man does the same it tends to cost us a million (da big shots of course) When men are found out people run away, the media makes you public enemy #1 and sometimes #2, and sponsors drop you like swine flu, yet the “319” all have a chance to make millions from the those who profit from stuff like this. When are we gonna stop looking at the men who do this as sexual monsters and the women who are doing the humpin to be mere partners? when do we start puting them before the firing squads? when are they like home girl in that movie MONSTER and have you heard much about any of the women involve with either magic or tiger? NOOOOOOOO! some of tigers women are working on a book deals or some kind of press release. These women come out proud at times of what they have done and why not we are just gonna point our fingers at the tiger’s and magic’s and wilt’s of the world, but what about these hoes who are right there and know what they are doing WHAT ABOUT DA HOES??? listen a man is only as good as the woman who LET’S US IN! except by force a woman allows us to do these things, there are no doggs! no playa players, no gigalos, just women who allow US TO GET SOME! so remember this where there is a so called dirty filthy man humpin some female….there usually is a willing woman underneath him, on top, in front, or however…

    You’re an idiot!

  19. jonny_ro - Feb 16, 2010 at 9:46 AM

You morons!!! Tiger was about a clean persona. He represented himself as a perfect gentleman and he wasn’t, just like the rest of us he was a regular guy who made millions and liked sex with beautiful woman.

  20. MJ - Feb 16, 2010 at 11:20 AM

Hey, kids, I hate to spoil your little comments with facts, but here’s a fact: Magic messed around with these women *before* he was married. He was never married until after he contracted HIV.

  21. rumpdog1 - Feb 16, 2010 at 9:30 PM

You guys can say what you want but magic will always be remembered as a great player who still has ties with America.

  22. truthbetold - Feb 17, 2010 at 3:59 AM

To all of you who are ranting and raving here about whether Magic Johnson or Tiger Woods are good men/athletes are not, read the story I have pasted below.
Both of these men have done more for their respective sports and their communities than all of us combined. So, whether they had countless women (who all were WILLING partners!) or not shouldn’t matter to us because NO ONE is above reproach. The media is controlled by companies who have only one objective in mind – TO MAKE $$$$.
When they publish news stories about athletes who have “sinned” against their fans, wives, family, et al, they do it to create controversy which in turn creates millions of dollars for these media controlled enterprises. An interesting observation I see among people who post comments online such as what I see here is an example of what is happening to our society as a whole. We take sides with people we don’t even know just to feel validated or somehow important in this crazy existence we call life.
To read more about what I am talking about, I encourage all of you who are truly interested in this phenomenon to read the following story. It will open your eyes to the evil that is taking place within our society and to humankind. Just read the comments posted here and you will see exactly what I am referring to. Peace to all!

The only mistake Tiger made unlike Magic, he should have greased these tricks Palms, and we would have been discussing someone else transgressions right about now.

  24. Ron - Feb 18, 2010 at 1:26 AM

“Am I a racist for stating the facts?”
Uh, yes you are a racist, and they aren’t “facts.” Get your head out. Where I live (Orange County, California), there are more WHITE kids born out of wedlock than any other race.
So yeah…GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT, your slip is SHOWING, Terry.

  25. e.m.ali - Feb 18, 2010 at 2:26 PM
